Oyster Creek Taken Offline for Maintenance

Work being done on turbine speed controller

A planned maintenance project led to the shutdown of the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station on Monday.

Plant officials say the facility was taken offline at 10:50 a.m. in order to perform planned maintenance on a turbine speed controller.

The maintenance work cannot be performed while the plant is generating electricity, said plant spokesowman Suzanne D'Ambrosio.

Staff will take advantage of the outage to perform additional maintenance work to keep the unit running reliably and efficiently, D'Ambrosio said.

There was no immediate information available as to when the plant, which produces enough energy to power 600,000 homes, will come back online. Officials said they will make an announcement when the maintenance work is complete.
