Also, 2013 Surflight schedule announced this week.
Shortly after Sandy, a group of fairly recent Surflight Theatre alumni, spearheaded by Michael Blackmon-Ham - who worked at Surflight over the course of several seasons - joined forces via Facebook, and banded together to help the LBI community. The group of organizers reached out to the Southern Ocean County Community Foundation (www.soccfoundation.org), a non-profit organization that supports the seven food pantries located in Southern Ocean County. Since the storm, the food banks have been even more challenged to meet the needs of their local populations. The SOCC Foundation agreed to be the beneficiary organization of the benefit, as a conduit to distribute the proceeds to the seven local food banks including: The Barnegat Food Pantry…

The Sound of Music will be showing on Thursday, July 26 at 8 p.m.
The hills are alive at the Surflight Theatre as "The Sound of Music" premieres at Ocean County’s oldest professional theater with two Lacey kids on stage. Emily Brennan and her brother Gavin will be starring in their first professional show, running from Thursday, July 26 through Saturday, Aug. 25. “It makes people laugh and people happy. It makes me happy,” Emily Brennan, an 11-year-old Mill Pond Elementary School student, said. Emily and Gavin auditioned for parts after their father Ed Brennan had seen a call for cast members. The children didn’t choose their parts but auditioned for parts requested by the director and were notified three weeks later that they earned the spots. Auditions on Friday will help fill casts of "Annie" and "The Sound of Music"
Boys who like to sing and dance are being sought for auditions this Friday for the Surflight Theatre’s 63rd season of Broadway at the Beach, for a season that includes “Annie” and “The Sound of Music.” Adult auditions are scheduled for this Friday as well, the producers said. Last Saturday, nearly 80 children ages 5 to 16 attended auditions for the two musicals, but nearly all of them were girls, most from Long Beach Island, Manahawkin, Barnegat, Little Egg Harbor and other surrounding towns, but some came from farther to audition because they spend their summers on LBI, the producers said. “We saw some really talented kids,” said Tchia Casselle, associate producer for Surflight Theatre, Ocean County’s oldest professional theater. Television, film and theater stars like Justin Guarini, an American idol finalist, along with off-Broadway artists and young debut actors let loose their voices and their emotions. "How are we gonna pay?” Justin Guarini sang as a young guitarist “Roger” in the beginning of the first act. Surflight Theatre was asking itself this very question just a few months ago, when drowning in $4 …
