Brower, who allegedly hid a possible sex-abuse case during her time as Assistant Superintendent of Wall Schools, was indicted last Monday. She pleaded not guilty to the three charges brought against her — second-degree official misconduct, third-degree hindering apprehension and fourth-degree obstruction. The Lacey Board of Education suspended Brower without pay pending the outcome of her trial. She will continue to recieve medical benefits during her suspension. Applause erupted when residents called on Dr. Sandra Brower to resign; Lacey Township High School senior said the superintendent has 'lost all respect'
LACEY, NJ -- The Lacey Board of Education suspended Superintendent Dr. Sandra Brower without pay Friday evening, nearly a week after she was indicted by a Monmouth County grand jury. Four board members voted to suspend Brower, 46, after she was charged with second-degree official misconduct, third-degree hindering apprehension and fourth-degree obstruction. Board members Eric Schubinger, Jack Martenak and Linda Downing abstained during the special meeting due to conflicts of interest because of family members who work for the district. “It’s a sad turn of events what happened here. I’m sick to my stomach. I’ve been that way since day one,” board member Frank Palino said. “It’s a hard thing to do what we did here. I feel bad for this …

It is "critical" to maintain stability for the students, Richard Starodub says
Superintendent Dr. Sandra Brower’s indictment poses a “difficult time” for the Lacey Township School District but former Superintendent Richard Starodub is confident the community will recover. “I have a high level of confidence in the staff, the administration and the Board of Education in getting good legal advice from Mr. Stein (the board attorney),” said Starodub, who served as superintendent for 21 years and worked for the district for a total of 32. “The board is in a very strong position with all those elements to get through this unfortunate situation,” he said. Starodub, 64, announced his retirement in May 2011. His last day with the Lacey Township School District was Oct. 31, 2011, when Brower took over in November. Brower was …

Dear Parents and Guardians: We remain in shock and deep sadness as we are hearing the news and seeing the images coming to us from Newtown, Connecticut where an unspeakable and senseless act of violence occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School yesterday. We are all heartbroken for the families and we join a nation in mourning and in prayer. The safety of your children is our highest priority in Lacey Township. 'Listening and Doing' forums to begin in January
A year ago Nov. 15, Superintendent Dr. Sandra Brower took her first steps into the Lacey Township School District. The highlights of her first year fall back to all that was accomplished during the transition period—listening and learning, she said. “We made a lot of changes,” she said. That first year was a time for Brower to get to know the community, its expectations and its desires, she said. “I have learned Lacey is unlike any other district. It’s about involvement, tradition and cherishing the things that make Lacey different,” she said. “You don’t change those things but keep them intact and build on them.” But the year also was one of challenges with the loss of student Ana Kopack and Hurricane Sandy, she said. “To watch the …

Dr. Sandra Brower’s contract will now reflect her proper start date
The school district amended Superintendent Dr. Sandra Brower’s contract after a public hearing at Monday’s Board of Education meeting. The board announced earlier in May that it would hold a public hearing to consider a “clarifying amendment” to the superintendent’s contract. The hearing was tabled until Monday night. When Brower was hired as the superintendent of schools, her start date was pending her release as assistant superintendent in the Wall Township School District, Board of Education Jack Martenak said. As a result, the contract did not reflect her actual start date. “There’s a ripple effect on other dates in her contract,” he previously said. Dates in Brower’s contract are dependent on her start date. Some dates impacted …

I again want to congratulate you on your fine accomplishments and all that you have contributed to Lacey Township. You have made us so very proud and I am inspired by the personal stories of family and special guests who attended graduation to see you – achieving greatness against all odds. Unfortunately, despite all the planning that went into preparing for graduation, yesterday’s weather did not cooperate. I want to extend my deepest apologies for the weather as it certainly did rain on us consistently and without reprieve. The decision to hold the graduation ceremony is made using all of the data available including weather reports from NOAA, the National Weather Service, and news organizations that forecast local weather. As you may …

The Board of Education cited a misunderstanding in the processes of holding the public hearing
The school district tabled the public hearing that would amend Superintendent Dr. Sandra Brower’s contract. The Board of Education needed to clarify the process that needed to be followed in order to hold the public hearing, President Jack Martenak said. There was a misunderstanding regarding public announcements and whether the public hearing could be added onto the general school board meeting agenda, he added. “This is our first time hiring a new superintendent,” he said. “We have to figure out the process.” The board announced earlier this month that it will hold a public hearing to consider a “clarifying amendment” to the superintendent’s contract. The hearing was tabled until further notice. When Brower was hired as the …
