UPDATE: Public Meetings to Discuss Replacement of Oyster Creek Changed To May 8

State to update community on the status of the concept of constructing a new facility locally

The latest public information sessions on the future use of the Oyster Creek Generating Station site has been moved to May 8, Township Administrator Veronica Laureigh said. The sessions were slated for today, but have been changed to May 8 at the Lacey Middle School. Area residents can attend two sessions that day - one from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.  to 9 p.m. Officials from Lacey, Ocean and Barnegat recently met with the state Department of Planning Advocacy to discuss the next phase of locating a new generating facility in Lacey Township come 2019, when the operation of Oyster Creek will cease. “As far as moving forward, it’s important,” Mayor David Most has said. “This is a long process and I’m looking forward to the state and the …

State Grants Oyster Creek Discharge Permit

Oyster Creek Generating Station will continue to pump water from the Forked River and into Oyster Creek

The state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) granted Exelon Corporation a permit that allows the plant to continue to withdraw water from the Forked River and discharge it into Oyster Creek. The New Jersey Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit renewal was granted in accordance with the agreement negotiated by the state and Exelon to close the plant down in 2019, ten years before its federal operating license expires, the DEP said. "The early closure of the Oyster Creek plant is a major win for the long-term health of the Barnegat Bay ecosystem," said DEP Commissioner Bob Martin. The permit includes the conditions of the Dec. 9 2010 Administrative Consent Order (ACO) between Exelon and the DEP. The renewal takes effect …

Gee, here's a cost saver for Governor Christie. The DEP no longer works to protect either the citizens or animals of New Jersey so maybe we could just do away with the entire department which is known to be a haven for political jobs anyway.
