Jersey Shore Summer 2013: Beach Guide

Planning a vacation or just a day trip? Patch has all the information on the Shore's best beaches

More than six months after Superstorm Sandy caused unprecedented damage to the Jersey Shore region, the beaches will be open for Memorial Day Weekend and the summer. While certain access points and facilities might be closed as municipalities continue to work on restoration, for the most part, the beaches will be operational. The only beach that remains off limits to the public is Mantoloking. The borough was home to a breach that split Ocean County's northern barrier island in half and was one of the hardest hit communities in New Jersey during the storm. So as you prepare to stick your toes in the sand, are you wondering what will be accessible after Sandy? Need to know how much it will cost to buy badges to your favorite beach? Curious …

Stop FEMA Now Founder Fears Middle Class Exodus From Jersey Shore

Residents rally outside the Sandy-ravaged Surf Club in Ortley Beach

On any given day or night in the past, Joey Harrison's Surf Club parking lot on Sixth Avenue in Ortley Beach would be packed with cars. But that was before Oct. 29, 2012. There is no parking lot left. And soon the Surf Club will be a memory. Superstorm Sandy took care of that. Two oceanfront homes battered by Sandy served as a backdrop for the latest meeting of the grassroots group Stop FEMA Now. The meeting was held in the Ortley Beach section of Toms River - the spot many consider the epicenter of devastation in Ocean County. Stop FEMA Now founder George Kasimos pointed to the pale-yellow house knocked off its foundation, as seagulls wheeled overhead in a cerulean sky. The Atlantic Ocean roared beyond the new dunes. "Six months," he said…

Deadline Set for Dune Easements to be Signed

Officials hoping project will begin this summer from Manasquan to Barnegat inlets

Oceanfront homeowners between Manasquan and Barnegat inlets are being urged to sign easements necessary for a beach renourishment project to get off the ground by May 1, officials said Thursday. U.S. Rep Jon Runyan (R-3) wrote to the mayors of a number of northern Ocean County municipalities this week urging them to secure all necessary easements for the massive dune and beach project by May 1, the date the Army Corps of Engineers must submit a work plan to Congress. The project's design – which would include the construction of approximately 25-foot high dunes, 75 foot wide berms and 175 acres of dune grass in the project area – was completed in 2007, but has languished after some oceanfront homeowners refused to sign easements that would…

Hurricane Sandy

Barnacle Bill's Video Game Graveyard

Since Hurricane Sandy caused massive destruction to the Ortley Beach amusement center, the sidewalk has been a graveyard for destroyed arcade machines.

Barnacle Bill's arcade and miniature golf course has been an Ortley Beach landmark for decades. During Hurricane Sandy, both the arcade and golf course suffered significant damage.  During the cleanup of the arcade, dozens of arcade cabinets, pinball machines, and crane games, all of them destroyed by flooding ocean water, were pulled out to the sidewalk creating a video game graveyard of sorts. Though the destroyed machines account for about 30 years of collecting, Bill's owner Bill Petruzel said, Barnacle Bill's will be rebuilt, hopefully by this summer.

Mayors to Jointly Announce Barrier Island Repopulation Friday

Brick Township, Toms River, and Seaside Heights will announce repopulation plans

The mayors of Brick Township, Toms River and Seaside Heights will jointly announce plans to permanently repopulate their barrier island communities Friday. The North Beach area of Toms River, all of Brick Township and single-family homes in Seaside Heights will be included in the formal joint request to repopulate their towns on the same day. The request will be submitted to Gov. Chris Christie for approval. Seaside Heights Mayor William Akers said Wednesday the repopulation date will be Jan. 7. The hard-hit neighborhood of Ortley Beach will not be included in the plan, officials said, however a statement will be made Friday regarding its eventual repopulation. I wish my mom (full timer) knew about these wonderful folks in Ortley, willing to help the seniors. I came up from North Carolina for the 1st two clean-outs/salvage, but, my son and I could not even dream about getting to the furniture and the yard which had a lot of 6th Ave in her driveway and back including telephone poles and I think a transformer cover. Now she hired a contractor, who also …   more ›

PHOTOS: Mantoloking, Seaside Roller Coaster Up Close; Future Plotted For Shore Beaches

Legislators get tour of Shore destruction

Members of New Jersey's General Assembly toured Ocean County communities devastated by Superstorm Sandy Thursday. The tour, led by State Police Superintendent Col. Rick Fuentes, along with local officials, gave lawmakers and members of the press an up-close look at what Sandy left behind – including the remnants of the Seaside Heights boardwalk and the now-iconic Jet Star roller coaster, which dropped from Casino Pier to the ocean during the storm. Casino Pier will be repaired in what is estimated to be a $45 million project, Seaside Heights Police Chief Thomas Boyd said, and the roller coaster will be removed from the ocean floor. Funtown Pier in nearby Seaside Park, is in the preliminary stages of assessing the damage with its insurance …

Lucie47, it is the ignorant people like you that give Seaside Heights such a "bad reputation." First off, The Borough of Seaside Park and the Borough of Seaside Heights are two separate municipalities, they are not decent and indecent "areas" of the same borough. Second, during the 60's and 70's, Seaside Heights was at the height of its GOOD reputation as the number one place for family fun along…   more ›

I, as an Ortley Beach homeowner am disgraced, and ashamed by the comments that I have read. GROW UP AND STEP UP! I understand completely the emotional, physical and financial phases we are going through. This is something we all knew would happen, but not of this magnatude. You make me laugh, "NOW YOU WANT DUNES", typical liberal mentality. (I HOPE THERE ECO FRIENDLY) Let's put a windmill in the …   more ›

Off-Season Parking Free in Most Beach Communities

Seaside Park's parking meter enforcement remains in effect on weekends, while other local Shore communities offer free parking 24/7 during the winter

If you find yourself headed to a shore community on the other side of Route 37’s Mathis Bridge to embrace one of the warmest winters on record, you may want to choose carefully where you park your vehicle. Seaside Heights, Ortley Beach, Lavallette, and Point Pleasant Beach all offer free parking during the off-season. However, Seaside Park still enforces parking meters on weekends. The decision to stop enforcement in the off-season is fairly new in Seaside Heights. “We stopped operating our meters in the winter last year,” Seaside Heights Township Administrator John Camera said in a phone interview. “We’re a resort community, and we like people coming here in the off-season. As a result, turning off the parking meters in the winter was a …
