David Giberson will compete in plumbing while John Syers will compete in welding
Two Lacey Township males will be traveling to Kansas City, Missouri next week for SkillsUSA, a national trades competition. David Giberson of Lanoka Harbor and John Syers of Forked River, both students of the Ocean County Vocational Technical School, received gold medals in state competitions for plumbing and welding respectively, qualifying for nationals. Plumbing Giberson participated in a county contest and then state before proceeding to nationals. He had to work on a simulated wall and floor and put together piping, drainage and water supply. “A lot of people don’t know what we do,” instructor Lori Miceli said. “People think we just fix leaking faucets. In 2009 the Ocean County Voc-Tech had 435 registered students in the evening classes. This year so far, there are 1236 registered students.
Ocean County Vocational Technical School, located in Toms River, is seeing record numbers of students registering for classes. Frank Folinus, director of the Adult Education Division since 1992, attributes much of the school’s increase in registration to the tuition costs, which are quite low when compared to other colleges in the area, as well as the circumstances people are finding themselves in during the current economic situation. “People come here to change their careers, or to begin a career that will keep them employable,” said Folinus. Event proceeds support Ocean County Vocational Technical School.
Wouldn’t it be nice to take part in an event where funds were raised that provided scholarship and grant money to students and teachers? And wouldn’t it be nice to go to a huge party where more than 60 restaurateurs showed up and brought their signature dishes, and for three hours your only goal was to try them all? “This is our 16th year [holding the event]," said Angela Castaldo, event coordinator for the International Chef’s Night Out through the Ocean County Foundation. "We have businesses that come and serve to our patrons, and the patrons walk around the arena for three hours and taste everything. U.S. Rep. says students' work in the sciences is important in guiding environmental policy
U.S. Rep. Jon Runyan made a visit to the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Sciences Thursday, allowing students to put their skills and accomplishments on display, and offering local conservation nonprofits that work closely with the county-run school some face time with the congressman. It was Runyan’s first visit to the Manahawkin science- and math-oriented high school, which is part of the Ocean County Vocational Technical School District and gives more than 200 bright students the chance to take college-level science courses, conduct field research and run an endangered species conservation program while getting their high school degrees.
