The resources can also be found on the Ocean County Library System's website
The Lacey Library has set up a table containing resources for those impacted by Hurricane Sandy. The display provides everything from resources to information on FEMA and volunteering or donating. “We were very full when Sandy happened,” Traci Callender said. Residents utilized the library as a place to stay warm, charge electronics and socialize. Even card tables were set up. Although it’s calmed down, people continue to use the library for informational purposes, she said. “We tried to be an informational resource for anyone who didn’t know where to go,” she said. The library also continues to do a lot of faxes for residents affected by the storm. Each fax is $1.50, then $1 for each additional fax. The library can only send faxes out. It…

Censorship is alive and well, as highlighted by Banned Books Week—and you might be surprised by who the most vocal challengers of books are.
The importance of the First Amendment and the concept of "intellectual freedom" might not always be readily apparent to most kids, but Banned Books Week is a great opportunity to make those lessons come alive for children—and adults. Banned Books Week is held annually during the last week of Sept. (Sept. 30-Oct. 6, 2012). The week is an occasion for libraries and bookstores across the U.S. to help folks realize just how real and ongoing a problem censorship is. Across several branches of the Ocean County Library, displays highlighting books that throughout the years were banned over up an education on the diverse, censored works. The impact and works of author Ray Bradbury, who has had several works on the banned books lists, is on …

Library customers were able to exchange food for a reduction of fines
More than 5,000 pounds of food was collected this month from Ocean County Library system patrons last week during the "Food for Fines" program. The Foodbank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties received the bounty last week after patrons at the library system's 21 locations exchanged food for a reduction in overdue library fines, capped at $20 per person. “The “Food for Fines” program would not have been possible without the partnership of the Ocean County Health Department,” library Director Susan Quinn said. “They approached the library with the idea for running the program when they saw an urgent need in the community through the work they do every day in promoting healthy lifestyles and providing leadership in consistent, quality health-care…

Library system is declared tops by a national publication
For the second year in a row, the Ocean County Library system has been recognized as a "Star Library" in an industry publication. Library Journal, a national publication covering libraries and library science, selected the Ocean County system for the award based on 2009 data from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. It rated 7,513 public libraries in the United States and identified 262 as Star Libraries. The rankings are based on statistical data including circulation of materials, program attendance, Internet usage and annual customer traffic. According to library spokesman Larry Meegan, Ocean County was one of six New Jersey library systems to achieve the award, and places Ocean County Library in the top 15 large library …

Ocean Country Library summer reading programs encourage learning about distant lands
Money may be tight, but if traveling the world sounds like an exciting summer vacation, consider joining Ocean County Library’s travel themed summer program. The library is sponsoring a summer reading program for adults called “Novel Destinations.” Although the library is already a month into the summer reading program, patrons can still participate by reading, or listening to, five books that are set in five different countries, Librarian Christi Aldellizzi said. Upon completing each book, a patron informs the librarian and then receives a stamp in their “passport” booklet reading log. After five books have been read, the patron can fill out their name on a raffle ticket to win a prize basket at the end of the summer. There is one prize …

Berkeley man donated the plant
A tree may grow in Brooklyn, but bananas are growing in Toms River. Ocean County Library patron William Gumper of Holiday City at Berkeley donated a banana tree to the library headquarters on Washington Street three years ago. He’s watched and waited to see what would happen. Recently he pushed aside some of the leaves and found a stalk of small bananas growing there. “It’s a miracle. I never thought we’d grow bananas in New Jersey,’’ the retired New York City cop told the county’s freeholders. “I promote bananas but I don’t want to care for them,’’ he confessed. He’s given plants to the Windjammer Motor Lodge in Seaside Park, and the Crystal Diner at Routes 37 and 166 in Toms River, but has no reports of those trees bearing fruit. The …

Lacey Library to hold annual book sale from May 4 to May 7
Bookworms will be happy to hear that the Lacey Library’s annual book sale begins today. The book sale, sponsored by Friends of the Lacey Library, will feature over 7,000 books and more. “We do it as a community service. We like the books to be recycled rather than thrown out,” said Ellie Greco, President of Friends of the Lacey Library. Friends of the Lacey Library have been running book sales since 1974 but they have grown over the years. The book sale became a weeklong event in 1994. Over the past two days, residents dropped off everything from books to board games.
