Oyster Creek Returns to Service Following Refueling and Maintenance Outage

Findings have been addressed, according to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission

Oyster Creek Generating Station has returned to service after a 42-day refueling and maintenance outage. According to Tuesday’s Power Reactor Status Report by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the nuclear power plant was operating at 22 percent. The power generator was taken offline on Oct. 22 for a planned refueling outage. Since that outage, the NRC has reported the discovery of “indications,” or precursors to cracks, in the reactor nozzle and a pinhole leak in the reactor vessel head cooling system. Both issues have been resolved, NRC spokesman Neil Sheehan said. “NRC metallurgical specialists reviewed the company’s evaluation of the flaws and its repair plans and work. Members of the public will have the opportunity to discuss plant-related topics with NRC inspectors

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will be conducting an open house to discuss the annual assessment of Oyster Creek Generating Station on Wednesday, March 28 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Holiday Inn in Stafford Township. “Members of the public will have an opportunity to learn first-hand from NRC staff members about the plant’s safety performance during 2011 and the NRC’s oversight of the facility,” Neil Sheehan said in a NRC press release. Citizens will be able to discuss plant-related topics with NRC inspectors and the Region I supervisor assigned to Oyster Creek. Overall, the plant operated safely during 2011, the NRC said. Oyster Creek Protesters: 'Enough is Enough'

New Jersey Environmental Federation will lead a local demonstration in concordance with the National Day of Solidarity, a country-wide protest against nuclear plants

The state had originally ruled against Vermont Yankee’s federal operating license, which gives the plant 20 more years to operate. The ruling went against “public and political upheaval,” Davies said, which sparks concerns that the same could happen at Oyster Creek. “We’re …
