Technology, professional development, character education and classroom instruction, just some of Dr. Peter Kopack’s niches
Dr. Peter Kopack believes in a collaborative and innovative environment. From technology and professional development to character education and classroom instruction, Kopack plans to utilize all he learned as vice principal of Asher Holmes Elementary School in Marlboro as the new Principal of Mill Pond. “I want to find ways to empower students to grow emotionally, socially and academically,” he said, adding that students should strive to be creative, innovative and collaborative. Kopack graduated from Howell Township High School. He then attended The College of New Jersey where he received his bachelor's of arts degree in art education. He used the interdisciplinary approach he was taught at TCNJ as an art teacher in Middletown, infusing …

The Mill Pond Drama Club recently put on three performances of the classic story, “Cinderella.” “Thanks to the aide of some very special volunteers and talented students, our play was a great success,” said Drama Club Director Patricia DiSabato. “I surrounded myself with some very hard working people who all shared the same goal—to include as many students as we possibly could and allow them to take ownership of this play, exercise their creativity and make the play their own.” The Publicity Committee created the program cover and publicity posters while the set designs were drawn and painted by the Set Design Committee, she said. Students were chosen from those two groups to create the Stage Crew. “It honestly brings tears to my eyes to …

All proceeds benefit the Parent Teacher Associations of Mill Pond and Cedar Creek Elementary Schools
BMX stunt athletes will be performing at Mill Pond Elementary School for families on Friday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. “Last time we did it, there were three guys who did all kinds of tricks for the kids and present a message,” said Lisa Gudzak, Parent Teacher Association chairperson for the event. Two years ago, Gudzak was looking for an event to hold for mothers and sons and came across Perfection on Wheels while researching on the Internet. The group performs school assembly programs and presentations with a positive message for students. “It was nothing I ever heard of before,” she said. “The kids had a great time.” For the second time, the company will set up ramps in the Mill Pond gym where families could sit and watch on the bleachers, …

Dr. Peter Kopack, currently an assistant principal of an elementary school in Morganville, will be making $114,000
Lacey’s Board of Education voted unanimously Monday to hire Dr. Peter Kopack as the new principal of Mill Pond Elementary School. Kopack is currently the assistant principal at Asher Holmes Elementary School in Morganville, which is a part of the Marlboro Township School District. He will replace Principal Susan Gallagher, who retires in June. “He’ll bring a lot of energy along with a solid technology and curriculum background,” Board of Education President Jack Martenak said. The motion to hire Kopack was made after the Board of Education entered a private session during Monday's school board meeting. The Lacey school board is still negotiating Kopack’s release date with the Marlboro Township School District. Gallagher’s retirement was …

"Tar Wars" presentations to kick-off this week
Mill Pond Elementary School's nurse and health teacher will begin presenting the Tar Wars anti-smoking program to fifth graders on Tuesday. "I am always looking for creative ways to teach kids about topics like smoking, exercise, and nutrition and I came across Tar Wars on the Internet last year," said Mill Pond school nurse Anita Hergert. Tar Wars is an anti-tobacco education program owned and operated by the American Academy of Family Physicians designed for 4th and 5th grade students and consists of three parts: a pre-activity exercise, a 40-50 minute classroom presentation and a follow up poster contest. Hergert said they have already completed the pre-activity exercise, which was a pre-test to find out students' impressions of …

New club a hit among Lacey's fifth and sixth graders
When the Proud Paws Club was launched at Mill Pond Elementary School in October, the founders, Lori Rutigliano and Jacque Supsie got a big surprise -- 150 out of the school's 750 students signed up to join. "It's a club to foster respect and manners among children of today," said Rutigliano. "Also, to show that giving back to the community and being an upstanding citizen can really pay off." Rutigliano said the response was so overwhelming they had to break the club up into two groups, one for the fifth graders and the other for the sixth graders, just to make it manageable. The club, which meets alternating weeks between the two groups, is extracurricular and is being run on the two teachers' own time. Rutigliano and Supsie wanted to take…

Mill Pond Elementary School's principal gives Patch an update on community garden
The crops are beginning to show signs of growth at the community garden planted earlier this year at the Mill Pond School in Lacey. Principal Sue Gallagher said some squash and eggplants can be seen while other plants have begun to flower. "None of the crops are ready yet, but we have peas and some snap peas growing," Gallagher said. Gallagher said when the vegetables are ready to be picked they will be collected and given to the Lacey Foodbank, which distributes food to those in need on Thursdays. Squash, tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce and some eggplants will be ready later in the summer. Special education teacher Anthony Mangeruga recently spent a Saturday installing a simple sprinkler system in the garden. "It's not like what you would …
