Mark Geiger, a math teacher at Lacey Township High School, leaves district to referee professionally
Mark Geiger has two passions — the classroom and the soccer field. As of Friday, Feb. 1, the high school math teacher will be leaving one for the other. After teaching at Lacey Township High School for 17 years, Geiger, 38, will be leaving the district to referee professionally. His resignation was approved at the December Board of Education meeting. “It was hard,” Geiger said of his decision. “(Lacey’s) a great place. I’ve had a good run here.” Geiger began reffing at 13 years old as a way to make a few extra bucks. Over the years, he was seen by the right people and went professional, he said. Most recently, he refereed at the Olympics. To reach his goal of refereeing at the World Cup, Geiger would need to put more time in at seminars …

Lacey Township High School teacher Mark Geiger will be the fourth official in the semifinal match between Brazil and South Korea at 2:45 p.m.
The men’s soccer match between Japan and Egypt will be one to remember, Lacey teacher and Olympic referee Mark Geiger said. “As would be expected, the quarterfinal matches were difficult ones that tested the referees physically and mentally,” he said in an email. Geiger refereed the game on Saturday morning. Japan beat Egypt 3-0 in front of 70,772 spectators, Geiger said. Some plays are trying because the referees have to make decisions in just a matter of seconds. “The game was very exciting to be a part of,” he said. “The crowd was very energetic, and working a match in Old Trafford was simply incredible. Lacey Township High School math teacher Mark Geiger hopes to bring 'worldly perspective' back to students
On most days, Mark Geiger is a math whiz, teaching Lacey High School students everything from basic mathematics to calculus. But these days look a little bit different as he walks out of a tunnel and onto a field with Olympic soccer teams as a professional referee. “It is an unreal feeling hearing the anthem playing as we enter the field with thousands of people cheering on their teams,” Geiger, formerly the girl’s assistant varsity soccer coach, said in an email. Geiger never thought what used to be just a hobby would get him to the Olympics.
