UPDATE: Cause of Laurel Boulevard Brush Fire Undetermined

A "nuisance fire" ignited on the property where Lacey Town Village is to be built

The cause of a brush fire that ignited across from the CVS on Route 9 and Laurel Boulevard is still undetermined, Detective Sergeant Christopher Cornelius said. The Lanoka Harbor Fire Department responded to the scene at around 10:24 a.m. The blaze was extinguished by 11:30 a.m. The blaze was contained to approximately half an acre, Cornelius said. One fireman called it a “nuisance fire.” The location of the fire was on the property where Lacey Town Village, a non-age-restricted housing development, is to be built. The land had been previously cleared where debris caught fire. No damage was done to the property as the land that was burnt was covered with grass seeds and straw, Cornelius said. Materials from the fire will be sent to a lab …

Daniel Inglis, a 24-year-old Lacey native who was paralyzed after a car accident on Christmas Eve, will be rooting for the Giants this Sunday. “Daniel would like to say thank you, he will beat this and GO BIG BLUE!” his father, Daniel Inglis Sr. said in an e-mail. “We are diehard giants fans.” Daniel Inglis recently received an autographed picture from Victor Cruz, the wide receiver for the New York Giants. “He told Danny to stay strong and he is thinking of Danny,” Daniel Inglis Sr. said. “When I showed the picture to Daniel, he smiled from ear to ear it really lifted his spirits." Community Rallies Together for Paralyzed Lacey Firefighter

Fundraisers planned for Daniel Inglis, who was injured in a single-car accident on Christmas Eve

Several charity events will be held to support a local man who was paralyzed after a car accident on Christmas Eve. Daniel Inglis, 24, was leaving the Lincoln Tunnel when he got into a single-car accident and found himself in Bellevue Hospital Center in New York City. Born and raised in Lacey, Inglis is now considered a quadriplegic, paralyzed from the neck down. “We’re just trying to stay positive about his hopeful recovery,” Jess Inglis, Daniel’s sister said. Jess described her brother as “very active.” Daniel is a Union City police officer, where he currently lives, and a volunteer firefighter in Lanoka Harbor. “He’s always done good,” she said. “It’s just a tragedy. It couldn’t have happened to a better person.” Daniel, a 2006 graduate…

9/11: A Decade Later

Forked River Rotary Club Donates to Fire Company's 9/11 Memorial

The Rotary Club presented a check of $2,500 to the Lanoka Harbor Fire Department's 9/11 memorial

When the Lanoka Harbor Fire Department set out to build their 9/11 memorial, they asked for community support in the form of money, time, trades or skills. The Forked River Rotary Club did just that as they presented a $2,500 check to the fire company at the township committee meeting on Thursday, Sept. 22. “This memorial, although located at the Lanoka Harbor Firehouse, is truly a township memorial,” Kathy Nelm said. “With the members of the department being the guardians, so to speak, of this piece of our nation’s history.” Members of the fire department worked diligently on planning the memorial and raising the funds to complete it before the tenth anniversary, Nelm said. But the total amount to complete the project was not raised. In …

GALLERY: Local Fire Department Unveils WTC Steel 9/11 Memorial

The memorial incorporates two granite towers connected by a piece of steel from the World Trade Center

Over 150 Lacey residents stood outside of the Lanoka Harbor Fire Company as a new 9/11 memorial was unveiled on the tenth anniversary of the tragedy. The memorial incorporates two six-foot-tall granite towers and a piece of steel from the World Trade Center. The water fountain illuminates blue during the night. With white lights shining and the red from the Lanoka Harbor Fire Department's sign, the memorial lights up red, white and blue - a feature that was not planned, Ziemian said. An American "flag of heroes" that will list the names of first responders was laid over the steel. The memorial will have benches for the public to sit at and reflect in the future, Ziemian said. The department also plans to add another monumental stone on the…

GALLERY: Lacey Dazzles With Fireworks Display

Residents enjoy an Independence Day celebration on Tuesday

Although Lacey's firework show did not have as many attendees as usual, residents enjoyed a belated Independence Day celebration Tuesday at Lacey Township High School. Rob Larsen provided the music with a mix of pop and patriotic tunes. The Lacey Police Department, Lanoka Harbor Fire Department, and the Lanoka Harbor EMS were on hand to provide emergency coverage. The show started shortly after 9 p.m. and lasted about 15 minutes.

PHOTOS: Lanoka Harbor Fire Fighters Clean Cars To Raise Funds For 9/11 Memorial

All proceeds benefit the 9/11 memorial, which is expected to be built by Sept. 11, 2011

The Lanoka Harbor Fire Company held a car wash to raise funds for their 9/11 memorial, which will include a piece of steel from the World Trade Center. Motorists stopped by the firehouse located on Route 9 and drove their cars under a 75 foot aerial ladder spraying water down on them. Chief Amrozewicz was on hand washing and drying vehicles. Amrozewicz is thankful to all motorists that stopped to get their cars washed, he said. The fire department received the steel from the NY/NJ Port Authority earlier this year. The 9/11 memorial will incorporate the WTC steel and the Lanoka Harbor fire company is committed to building it in time for the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks. For more information on the fire company's memorial, read…
