With the school district exceeding the state mandated cap in a tax levy increase, some are wondering what is in the 2013-14 budget. The above photos were included in Superintendent Dr. Sandra Brower's powerpoint presentation, breaking down the budget, which proposes a $235 tax increase for the average Lacey homeowner. The actual budget will be uploaded once it is made available by the school district.
Pending school board approval, the average Lacey homeowner can expect to see a $235 increase in taxes
The average Lacey homeowner can expect to see a $235 increase in taxes for the year, a reduction from what the Board of Education originally proposed in its preliminary budget. The district presented a revised version of its proposed budget, which originally increased the local tax levy by 4.9 percent or about $300 for the year to the average homeowner. The board is now proposing a 2.8 percent increase in the local tax levy. The spending plan of $64,524,195 calls for a $41,210,651 tax levy. The average homeowner, assessed at $316,000, will pay an additional $19.58 per month if the 2013-14 budget is approved as is. A public hearing, in which the board will vote on the budget, is at 6 p.m. Friday, March 22 in the high school Lecture Hall. '…

Nominations for students who volunteered after Hurricane Sandy will be accepted until Friday, March 15
The Lacey Township School District is now accepting nominations for Hands on Heroes. "We know the importance of the role of a volunteer. When volunteers decide to serve, they are not looking for recognition or reward, they are only seeking to help others," a statement on the school district's website said. During Superstorm Sandy many Lacey students volunteered to help those impacted. "Student volunteers often get little attention, but they have such an important impact," the statement said. Student nominees will be spotlighted on the school district's website and recognized for their service during an evening ceremony in April 2013, National Volunteer Month. Those nominated and their parents will be invited. "We want to recognize …

Full day kindergarten a 'game changer' for the Lacey Township School District
Parents of incoming kindergarteners applauded when the district introduced its first full day program at Kindergarten Orientation Tuesday night. “I don’t think you’re excited enough because I know you’re worried about your children going to school,” said William Zylinski, District Supervisor for Humanities. Zylinski encouraged Assistant Superintendent Dr. Vanessa Clark to begin the program with three words: full day kindergarten, he said. “It is an absolute game changer for your children. The fact that the Board of Education saw it that important to establish a full day program for your children, you’ll be the first to benefit in that really as a group,” he said. The district announced the implementation of its full day program at its …

Waivers used to exceed state-mandated 2 percent cap
The Lacey Board of Education approved its 2013-14 preliminary school district budget, which includes a 4.9 percent increase in the local tax levy. “As this budget is today, I’m not in support of it,” President Eric Schubiger said at Monday’s special meeting. “I know we have a lot of work to do and I know that we are all going to look at this closely in the next several weeks.” The preliminary budget was approved by a vote of 5-2, with Schubiger and board member Frank Palino opposed. After boasting a zero percent tax increase for two straight years followed by a 1.7 percent increase in the levy in 2012, the board was unable to introduce its budget within the state-mandated 2 percent cap. The proposed $65,378,595 spending plan calls for a $…

Doors at all Lacey schools will now be locked and visitors will be required to state the nature of their visit prior to being granted access
The Lacey Township School District will begin boosting school security with a security badge system that the Board of Education purchased for $35,835 with a grant. The system, which was approved at the February school board meeting, is just one school safety initiative that the district is implementing following the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. “The security badge system will provide every staff member with swipe access to their respective buildings,” board President Eric Schubiger said. The system will be installed at the front door and one additional door at each of the six school buildings in Lacey. Staff members will be provided an identification card, which will include a photo and a barcode, coded with …

Public hearing set for Friday, March 22 at 6 p.m.
A Board of Education meeting will be held on Monday, March 4 at 6:30 p.m. in the high school Lecture Hall to adopt a preliminary budget. “In the next couple weeks we have a lot of things to do with getting our budget together,” board President Eric Schubiger said, adding that the district will be working “diligently” during the limited window they were given to adopt a budget. At the next school board meeting on Monday, March 18 at 7:30 p.m., the district will do a formal presentation on the budget. A public hearing will be held in the Lecture Hall on Friday, March 22 at 6 p.m. “Right now we don’t have the final numbers from the state regarding state aid. We don’t have a firm grasp of what’s going to happen with federal money with the …

White House details what each state stands to lose if $85 billion in spending cuts take effect on March 1
Superintendent Dr. Sandra Brower said it’s too soon to say how the Lacey Township School District could be impacted by federally proposed sequestration spending cuts. Funding for education in New Jersey would be slashed by nearly $30 million and drastic cuts made to health care programs and environmental protection should Congress fail to halt $85 billion in "sequestration" spending cuts scheduled to take hold March 1, the White House said Sunday. “It is too early to speculate how sequestration will affect our district,” Brower said. With state aid figures for school districts expected to be announced by the end of the week, it is possible those numbers could be modified if Congress approves the spending cuts, she said. But it’s “too early…

At approximately $254,000, the district will be implementing five full day kindergarten classes in each elementary school with a projected average class size of 25 students
Nearly nine months after the school district unveiled its full day kindergarten pilot with a lottery system, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Vanessa Clark announced that a program would be open to all Lacey kindergarteners in September. At approximately $254,000, the district will be implementing five full day kindergarten classes in each elementary school with a projected average class size of 25 students, Clark said during a report on the pilot program at Tuesday’s school board meeting. “We are very happy to be making this announcement this evening,” she said. The district unveiled its full day kindergarten pilot in July, with a lottery selecting 72 kindergarteners in August. Each elementary school had one full day kindergarten class and …

@Paul, my facts are FACTS....they just do not support what you state or what you want them to show. You made a false statement and I provided facts, so what do you do? You try to go in another direction. The information on Data Universe is provided by the towns and districts. These numbers are not made up, as you would like to try and dispel. It is disgusting that you try to claim otherwise. It …   more ›
