UPDATE: Public Meetings to Discuss Replacement of Oyster Creek Changed To May 8

State to update community on the status of the concept of constructing a new facility locally

The latest public information sessions on the future use of the Oyster Creek Generating Station site has been moved to May 8, Township Administrator Veronica Laureigh said. The sessions were slated for today, but have been changed to May 8 at the Lacey Middle School. Area residents can attend two sessions that day - one from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.  to 9 p.m. Officials from Lacey, Ocean and Barnegat recently met with the state Department of Planning Advocacy to discuss the next phase of locating a new generating facility in Lacey Township come 2019, when the operation of Oyster Creek will cease. “As far as moving forward, it’s important,” Mayor David Most has said. “This is a long process and I’m looking forward to the state and the …

Municipal Budget Includes $1.9 Million in Capital Spending

Budget to be introduced Thursday, April 25 at 7 p.m.

The Township Committee will be including $1.9 million in capital projects for the 2013-14 budget, as agreed upon at Thursday’s budget workshop meeting. Complete budget figures have yet to be provided and are expected to be finalized early next week, Chief Financial Officer Adrian Fanning said. An April 10 budget workshop meeting revealed that the municipal spending plan could potentially carry a 3-cent tax rate bump. Between the township, school and county budgets, Lacey residents can expect to see taxes increase approximately $420 a year. Taxes will increase $235 for the average homeowner for schools alone. While municipal departments made $3.9 million in capital requests, the township narrowed the list down to $1.9 million. In 2012, $1.8…

New Police Chief Works Towards 'Top Notch' Service

Chief David Paprota will be assessing every job title and function of the police department

One month and four new police officers later, work at the Lacey Township Police Department under new Chief of Police David A. Paprota is well under way. Paprota, appointed Chief on March 15, has been actively improving the department since he became Officer in Charge upon former Chief Bill Nally’s retirement. Starting by better connecting the police department with the community through Facebook and a new website and most recently completing the hiring of four new full-time police officers, three part-time special officers and a part-time dispatcher. “The future of the Lacey Township Police Department and the level of service provided to the public are dependent upon the hiring of the best possible candidates,” Paprota said. “The selection…

Kelly, you are 100% right.... It is NOT the State's responsibility to find something to do for "too many young people "just hanging around" doing nothing." I did not mean that the Police should find something for them to do....their parents should. But that is a whole other issue. My comment about kids hanging around doing nothing was merely an observation of mine. I just think when kids have …   more ›

Boston Marathon Explosions Spark Heightened Awareness at Oyster Creek

Nuclear power plant staff are in close contact with law enforcement officials

Security measures have been enhanced at Oyster Creek Generating Station following the explosions at the Boston Marathon that claimed the lives of three and wounded more than 170 people. “We are at a heightened state of security awareness,” spokesperson Suzanne D’Ambrosio said, adding that the measures taken are not unusual for public facilities. “Our security team stands at the ready as they do 24/7/365 to protect the plant, the public and our employees.” D’Ambrosio could not say what the increased security includes or how long it will last. “We stay in close contact with law enforcement officials and we’re closely tied to what’s going on,” she said. Peter for all of your knowledge of the flaws of the plant the one thing that you have yet to provide is any proof that there has been any negative effects at all from the plant outside of a few dead fish. There is absolutely 0 proof that the plant has caused autism in anyone. There is radiation alarms through out the plant and every worker has a personal meter that shows how much radiation they …   more ›

Lacey Calls for Dune Restoration at Island Beach State Park

A resolution approved Thursday calls on the state and Army Corps to replenish the dunes at the state park to protect Forked River from future storms

The Lacey Township Committee called on the state and Army Corps of Engineers to include Island Beach State Park in its dune restoration project in an effort to help protect Forked River from future storms. Various dune restoration projects are being pursued on the barrier island, including Island Beach State Park, which is adjoined between Forked River and Berkeley Township, Township Administrator and Municipal Clerk Veronica Laureigh said as the Committee approved a resolution Thursday. “It acts as a barrier to us, and if they put additional dunes at Island Beach State Park, it may help protect us from future storms,” she said. Lacey and Berkeley Townships are soliciting support to have the dunes restored at the state park. The Berkeley …

Addicted in Lacey

The Addict that Lives 'Day by Day'

Dorothie Bonfanti, a Lacey Township High School graduate, has been sober for nearly four years

Addiction is not a choice, but a disease, Dorothie Bonfanti said, a prevailing sickness that still has power even after nearly four years of sobriety. Bonfanti took those 1,372 days one at a time — the only way an addict can reach recovery, which is never actually achieved, as it’s an ongoing battle. The 29-year-old Lacey resident began her road to addiction at the youthful age of 13 with Percocet, a pain reliever prescribed for her Scoliosis. “I noticed the more I took, the better I felt,” she said. This habit continued for three months, before the prescription was no longer. Bonfanti got drunk for the first time at 15 years old. Then she smoked pot. “That was really the only thing to do here in Lacey,” she said. She continued drinking …

Website Aims to Set Record Straight for Shore Boaters

Marina owner: test run through bay showed few problems, though precautions should be taken

Getting ready to take the boat out, but worried that debris from Sandy may make it difficult? GoBoatingNJ.org may help. Since Hurricane Sandy came ashore in late October, reports of unprecedented destruction to area marine facilities have left boaters wondering if there will be a boating season in 2013, said Ed "Skip" Harrison, who is the owner of Baywood Marina, Brick Township, and Board Member of the Marine Trades Association of New Jersey. The www.goboatingnj.org initiative was launched to address these concerns by providing coverage of the restoration efforts taking place each day by state, federal and municipal agencies as well as scores of volunteers and organizations. The Go Boating NJ campaign highlights - through on-the-water …

If you want to treat school as a business...I've got some harsh news for you...you will be firing a boat load of staff AND even more students since in business you fire those that do not make the cut. But, I guess you don't look at the facts, just the sound bites of people not actually in education, lol.   more ›
