This is a feature that looks at five facts of Lacey’s history provided by “Lacey Township People and Progress,” a book written by Dr. Ralph K. Turp and stored at the library. 1. The Methodist Church used Potter's Church for years before worship places were constructed in Forked River and Lanoka Harbor. 2. In Fall 1977, the Lacey Historical Society held an exhibit of family bibles, prayer books and related texts. One had been secreted in bread in order to get it out of France at the time of the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre when 50,000 French Huguenots were massacred. 3. Sameul Worden created a salt work business in Forked River in 1754. Salt was a very important commodity at that time. 2. Stella GIllie Wilbert founded the Lacey Historical Society in 1962. 3. Samuel Brown enlisted as an Ensign under Cpt. John Stout in April 1776. He then oranized his own command in Forked River when he was commissioned to Captain. He was given command of a gun boat called "Usage." 4. Rev. John Price of Lacey was Captain in the Monmouth County Militia. He led the unloading of a ship called "Success." James Parker was memorialized for his 35 years of service as president of the Forked River Fire Company. 2. The Woodmansee homestead on the state game farm was one of the oldest homes in Forked River, built in 1784. 3. Taverns were the center of community life. People gathered there to hear the news, for political rallies, weddings, religious services, sales and to pick up mail. In the 1930s, cornfields located behind Eno’s Hotel were cleared to create an airfield, which was 2,000 feet long. The hangar was made of cinder blocks. Residents were able to take 3-minute rides to see their home from the sky. 2. During World War II, the Navy’s surveillance blimps practiced landing at the airfield. 3. After the airport closed, the Ocean County Mosquito Commission used the area in the 50s and 60s to store and fuel planes with DDT. 4. The classrooms in Lacey’s schoolhouses were constructed and used before electricity came to town. Each classroom had a wall of windows and stoves provided heat. 2. Although children walked to school, a century ago in Bamber, they started using a horse-drawn school bus. 3. The one room school was constructed in 1875 but eventually abandoned due to a declining population. Students then attended class in a room rented over Beame’s Store and Post Office. 4. The schoolhouse that was located on Frog Holler Road was open as early as 1790 but research indicates it was only used for private instruction. By the mid 1840s, the township did have an actual schoolhouse, probably in the same building. 2. Around that time, the private Good Luck Academy was educating students. Rail lines that were constructed by the New Jersey Southern Toms River and Waretown Railroad in 1870 divided the Mill Pond. Service began in 1871. The Central Railroad of New Jersey acquired the railroad in 1879. 2. The Central Railroad also ran the Jolly Tar Trail in 1927. The bus ran between Lakewood and Barnegat. 3. In 1914 Frank Briggs began showing feature films in a silent movie house located on the southeast corner of Station Drive and Parker Avenue. The Playhouse Theater also hosted vaudeville and other live entertainment. It closed in 1928 and was torn down in the late 1940s. 2. Charles A. Smith, a noteworthy philanthropist and owner of the former Hollywood Farm located east of Jones Road, included in his will funds that were donated to local churches as well as $15,000 to the township for the construction of a community hall. The Bamber post office was launched in 1873 and operated from Beame's Store. There was a classroom upstairs and a horse-drawn carriage was used as a school bus. 2. The dock opposite of the Captain’s Inn is the houseboat, previously known as Dater Horner’s Houseboat. The restaurant was well known for its clam chowder soup throughout the county. George Chamberlain developed the recipe. 2. In the late 1800s Lacey Township was a resort with three hotels located on the Shore Road in Cedar Creek.
