The three-year deal provides for 1.99 percent raises, caps unused sick days at 100 for new hires
The Lacey Township Board of Education and the district's supervisors union have agreed to a three-year contract that provides for 1.99 percent pay increases for the next three years. That contract agreement, reached in late May between the board and the Lacey Township Administrators and Supervisors Association, also caps sick day payouts for new hires and includes language regarding the state-mandated employee contributions to health care coverage. The bargaining unit covers all supervisory titles in the district, from principals to directors, supervisors and department chairpersons. The district's employees are in the midst of a four-year phase-in where they will eventually be contributing up to 35 percent of the cost of their health care…

Thank you for highlighting that for the last 20 or more years the Lacey Township School District has maintained an openness with the press and public that is indeed the envy of many other towns in New Jersey. While in many towns, including locally in Toms River, residents are fighting to have school board meetings televised, we have not only televised our meetings for over 20 years, we also make them available on our web site for those without access to Comcast. While many towns put restrictions on public comment, including requiring “pre-registration”, and setting time limits as short as three minutes, we do neither. And recently, implementing an initiative led by Dr. (Sandra) Brower, we began posting our board meeting Agendas and …

The Lacey Board of Education will hold a public hearing tonight on Superintendent Dr. Sandra Brower’s contract in addition to an administrative reorganization during its monthly meeting. Join us for live coverage at 7:30 p.m. Public Hearing The board has announced will hold a public hearing to consider a “clarifying amendment” to the superintendent’s contract. When Brower was hired as the Superintendent of Schools, her start date was pending her release as Assistant Superintendent in Wall, Board of Education Jack Martenak said. As a result, the contract did not reflect her actual start date. “There’s a ripple effect on other dates in her contract,” he said. Dates in Brower’s contract are dependent on her start date. Some dates impacted …

Hiring substitutes to monitor hallways could cost district thousands each month
To deter students from smoking in the bathrooms, the Lacey Township School District has been hiring substitutes to monitor the hallways at the high school. “There are two parts to this,” Board of Education President Jack Martenak said. “The smoking problem is something we’re looking to address. Putting people in place shows students we’re taking it seriously, and it will make an impact.” There has been a reported smoking problem within the high school that the district is attempting to crack down on, Martenak said. Prior to hiring substitutes as hall monitors, school staff was available for duty periods. Each teacher is assigned to a duty period to monitor the halls, lunchroom or busses, he said. But now, teachers are teaching additional …

Following signing of new law, the Board of Ed may consider passing a resolution that shifts board elections and gets rid of annual budget referendum
The Lacey Township School District may consider acting on new legislation that allows communities to move school board elections from April to November and forgo a public budget vote. The new law, signed by Gov. Chris Christie on Tuesday, says school boards that move their elections to the fall no longer need to have their budgets passed by public referendum if they do not exceed the state’s 2 percent tax levy cap. If they do exceed the cap, a public vote would still be held in November when board members are elected. “We’ll consider it,” Board of Education President Jack Martenak said. “At this point in time, we don’t have the details from the state on how this is going to be implemented.” If Lacey chooses to support the new legislation, …

Members defend 'balanced approach' taken to prepare students after graduation
Residents and school board members discussed the post-secondary educational options available to Lacey students after graduation at a meeting Tuesday night. During the public comment session, resident Tim O’Connor said that he attended a recent meet-and-greet event with Lacey’s Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Sandra Brower, where the Creative Studies Charter School was discussed, a proposed facility whose application was recently dismissed by the State of New Jersey. O’Connor said he's in favor of a "variation" on the type of school proposed by Pamela Brown, which would incorporate music, art, drama and movement more heavily into the academic curriculum. “In one of the articles I read, 40 percent of the students in Lacey have gone on to a …
