If "leave without pay" is determined, what effect does this have on her benefits? Ok, she doesn't get her salary but do they have to keep her on the health insurance plan? I think she should just be a stand up person and resigned so Lacey can move on.   more ›

Lacey Board of Education Taps Brewer As Next Principal Of Lanoka Harbor Elementary School

Current Assistant Principal at Lacey High School begins on July 1

With his four young boys and wife looking down from the top row of seats in the high school lecture hall, the Lacey Township Board of Education voted to appoint Jeffrey Brewer as the next principal of the Lanoka Harbor Elementary School. "I know Jeff is going to bring all the experience he has learned here at Lacey High School," Superintendent Sandra D. Brower said at the April 15 board meeting. "We are so excited for him." Brewer spent 15 years at Lacey Township High School, working as a teacher, coach, and currently as assistant principal. "I can promise you this," Brewer told the board. "You'll get my best. It's been a fantastic 15 years. I wouldn't have traded it for anything. There is a part of me that's sad to leave here, but I'm …

Letter: 'No Such Thing as a Spending Cap' to Lacey BOE

Former Lacey school board supporter expresses disappointment in district and its potential 2.8 percent increase in the local tax levy

Dear Editor, The township of Lacey is really in shambles, and ironically enough, it is not caused by the town council. The recent news surrounding a potential 2.8 percent tax increase issued by the Board of Education should come as no real surprise to the residents. Lets be realistic, when was the last time the Board of Education has made a decision that the town as a whole is happy with? Most of these board members supported and pitched the solar panel project. This was supposed to pay for itself and save hundreds of thousands of dollars, but where has that gotten us? We saved a few bucks each of the last five years or so thanks to their poor planning and now they're asking for year's worth of no tax increases back in one year. For years…

Super to Present Report on Kindergarten Pilot

Return to Lacey Patch at 7:30 p.m. for live coverage of the school board meeting

Superintendent Dr. Sandra Brower will be presenting a report on the full day kindergarten pilot program at Tuesday’s Board of Education at 7:30 p.m. in the high school Lecture Hall. The district unveiled its full day kindergarten pilot in July. The program began in September with 72 students selected through a lottery. Parents showed concern, stating that the pilot program puts the district on a “slipper slope” as it offers a select few a better education. Then school board President Jack Martenak said the pilot was a “good step” towards the district’s eventual goal of making full-time kindergarten available to all students. Brower’s report will unveil the program’s progress and where the district stands moving forward. In addition to the …

I have reconsidered my position regarding this matter. @Angelo from Newark, being the quintessential candidate for full day kindergarten justifies the program.   more ›

Schubiger Nominated as School Board President

Linda Downing was nominated as Vice President at the Board of Education's annual reorganization meeting; professional appointments remain the same for 2013

Eric Schubiger was nominated as the president of the Board of Education after an annual reorganization meeting Monday. “There’s no question that operating a public school district today is more difficult than ever for a lot of reasons,” Schubiger said. “I know we have the right people up here to help guide this community and this district through anything we will face. We have a tall task but I know we’re going to do a good job.” In 2013, the primary challenge will be adopting a budget that provides a quality education for students while keeping costs down, Schubiger said. Although Schubiger believes the economy is improving, 2013 will still be a struggle financially, he said. “We keep an eye on every dime now,” he said. Also, in light of …
