Lacey Lineman Dubbed Mr. Touchdown as Cheerleaders Raise $1K for Food Bank

The undefeated Lacey Lions will be competing in the South JerseyGroup IV semifinals on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 1 p.m.

Lacey Township High School lineman Joe Elefante has been dubbed Mr. Touchdown after the varsity cheerleading squad’s annual fundraiser for the Lacey Food Bank. Harold Peters of the Food Bank said he was “overwhelmed” by the team’s donation of $1,000. Each year, the cheerleaders campaign for their chosen senior football player by selling votes for a dollar each, Coach Jennifer O’Boyle said. The cheerleaders ask for support throughout the community and tables were also set up at games where spectators can vote. The fundraiser has raised almost $3,000 in the past three years. Cheerleader Savannah Gray campaigned for Elefante and raised the most money at $112. Gray participated “to help the food bank,” she said. “It’s awesome especially …

'Undersized' Lacey Football Player Strives For Chance with NFL

Warren Smith currently plays for the Dresden Monarchs in the German Football League

Warren Smith was somewhat of an underdog on the football field. “He was a little undersized his whole life,” high school coach Lou Vircillo said. As quarterback for the Lacey Lions in 2006 and 2007, colleges overlooked Smith. “I didn’t get recruited by colleges because I was undersized at 6 feet tall, and we didn’t throw the ball much,” Smith said. Today, Smith plays professionally for the German Football League, working his way toward the NFL. Smith began playing football at the age of 8 for Lacey Pop Warner, he said. “I picked football because it interested me and I loved the New York Giants!” he said. “I quickly fell in love with the game.” Vircillo described Smith as hard-working, diligent, conscientious, a good student, high-energy …

Weekend Events in Lacey Township

Farmers' market, 5K, flea markets, yard and bake sales, and football

With temperatures still reasonably warm and plenty going on, enjoy your weekend out and about in Lacey. According to the National Weather Service, this weekend will be sunny with temperatures in the high 60s. Jersey Fresh Farmers’ Market Today is the last day Jersey Fresh Farmers’ Market will be open. Stop by Community Hall in Forked River from noon to 5 p.m. to purchase fresh produce including vegetables and fruit. For more information, click here. Annual 5K The township’s annual 5K will take place at 8:30 a.m. at Gille Park. Registration begins at 7 a.m. Over 100 residents registered for the race but the township is anticipating over 300 to participate.
