Longtime Forked River Postmaster Retires

William Wehrendt to 'miss the interaction' with the community

As of 5 p.m. on July 31, William Wehrendt, Forked River postmaster for the past nine years, retired from the U.S. Postal Service. Wehrendt said he was one of 62 postmasters in the South Jersey region to take a retirement incentive offered by the Postmaster General, which included a small cash award. "I was in no hurry to retire; I enjoyed my job very much," said Wehrendt, who will soon turn 61. "But the Postmaster General is trying to reduce the workforce. The largest cost to the post office is personnel. Eighty cents on every dollar goes to people." Wehrendt said he had planned to retire at the end of the year anyway, so he took the early out incentive. To participate, postmasters had to be age 55 or older and have at least 30 years of …

Detours in effect Tuesday, Wednesday

If you hit a detour on Lakeside Drive, avoid that route until Thursday, May 26. Speculation, Not Demand, Fueling Gas Prices, Expert Says

Oil industry analyst says Wall Street speculation a main reason for high pump prices

The price of a gallon of gasoline has been on a steady rise since October and one of the chief reasons that drivers are being squeezed is not increased demand, but increased profit, one expert said Monday. Wall Street speculation is among the leading reasons that gas prices have been on a steady increase for the last six months, said Ben Brockwell, an oil industry analyst with the Oil Price Information Service – an oil industry news service based on Route 138 in Wall. “This is not a demand-driven rally (of increased prices),’’ said Brockwell, the oil news service' director of pricing. “There’s a lot of Wall Street money intrigued by oil as an investment vehicle to make a profit.’’ Nationally, the average price for a gallon of regular gas …

The latest grant, which was announced today by Congressman Jon Runyan (R-N.J.), amounts to $48,600 and has the lifetime of three years and does not require a ten percent municipal match. Two Ocean County roads ranked in the dozen deadliest in the state for pedestrians in recent years, according to a report released this week by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign, a nonprofit that examines roadway use in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut.
