Warming Hearts: Blanket Drive For Young Cardiac Patients

NJ's Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week closes, along with a local blanket drive, on Thursday

There is a small, hand-made quilt that lies at the foot of Christopher Olivadotti’s bed. He’s survived three more surgeries to mend his heart from a complicated defect. And there will doubtless be more turns in the cardiac unit of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where a kindly stranger nearly a decade ago was moved to acknowledge his fight for a lifetime with a small token – a little warm comfort for someone so small who had already seen so much. It’s a kindness that Christopher’s mother, Alexandra Scheininger, is trying to spread around for other veterans of the hospital’s cardiac …

Lacey Mother was Told Daughter Wouldn't 'Live More than a Few Hours'

Jaclyn Hardy of Lanoka Harbor is educating parents across the state about Congenital Heart Disease

Jaclyn Hardy of Lanoka Harbor has become an advocate of education for Congenital Heart Disease since her one-year-old was diagnosed. On July 17, 2011 she was rushed to JSMC in Cardiogenic Shock. That is where we learned the term CHD …

Lacey Mother Advocates for National Newborn Screening Awareness Month

Zoey Hardy, a Lanoka Harbor baby with Congenital Heart Disease, will be having her second open heart surgery today

Jaclyn Hardy’s 13-month-old baby went in for open-heart surgery today. On Wednesday, the Lanoka Harbor family prepared for what would be their baby’s second of three open-heart surgeries. Staying overnight in close vicinity to the hospital, the surgeons would open Zoey’s chest for the four-and-a-half-hour surgery. Hardy could not help but wonder what pain could have been avoided had the family known sooner that Zoey had Congenital Heart Disease (CHD). “She was born healthy,” Hardy said. “But there’s certain signs now that we didn’t know before that would be indicators of a heart problem.” Six days after she was born, Zoey returned to the hospital. She was sleeping a lot, wasn’t eating and had blue lips, Hardy said. “Something wasn’t right…
