There is a small, hand-made quilt that lies at the foot of Christopher Olivadotti’s bed. He’s had it since he left the hospital after his first open-heart surgery, the one he had when he was just two days old. Christopher is 9 years old now. He’s survived three more surgeries to mend his heart from a complicated defect. And there will doubtless be more turns in the cardiac unit of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where a kindly stranger nearly a decade ago was moved to acknowledge his fight for a lifetime with a small token – a little warm comfort for someone so small who had already seen so much. It’s a kindness that Christopher’s mother, Alexandra Scheininger, is trying to spread around for other veterans of the hospital’s cardiac …

Jaclyn Hardy of Lanoka Harbor is educating parents across the state about Congenital Heart Disease

Jaclyn Hardy of Lanoka Harbor has become an advocate of education for Congenital Heart Disease since her one-year-old was diagnosed. Today begins Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week, an annual awareness effort to help educate the public about Congenital Heart Defects and Hardy is speaking out: Since I last updated you Zoey had her third surgery, this one was open heart to repair her three Ventricular Septal Defects (holes in the heart) and take her Pulmonary band off. Zoey did very well from this surgery. In fact, she was walking two days after Open Heart Surgery and smiling only hours after. Zoey Rhyann Hardy was born on July 11, 2011. On July 17, 2011 she was rushed to JSMC in Cardiogenic Shock. That is where we learned the term CHD …

Zoey Hardy, a Lanoka Harbor baby with Congenital Heart Disease, will be having her second open heart surgery today
Jaclyn Hardy’s 13-month-old baby went in for open-heart surgery today. On Wednesday, the Lanoka Harbor family prepared for what would be their baby’s second of three open-heart surgeries. Staying overnight in close vicinity to the hospital, the surgeons would open Zoey’s chest for the four-and-a-half-hour surgery. Hardy could not help but wonder what pain could have been avoided had the family known sooner that Zoey had Congenital Heart Disease (CHD). “She was born healthy,” Hardy said. “But there’s certain signs now that we didn’t know before that would be indicators of a heart problem.” Six days after she was born, Zoey returned to the hospital. She was sleeping a lot, wasn’t eating and had blue lips, Hardy said. “Something wasn’t right…
