Some Lacey Businesses Return to Service, Others Seek to Recover

Captain's Inn is back in business; Ocean Beach Marina continues to clean up and assess damage

On a summer night, sitting along the water and across from a building that holds a piece of Lacey’s history as the sun sets with a cold drink in hand and wrap to eat is a staple in town. Well before Hurricane Sandy hit, the tiki bar at the Captain’s Inn was taking on water. Now, the bar is severely damaged. The restaurant’s structure built in the 1800s, stood strong. “The rest didn’t do too bad,” Debbie Kay said. “It’s built to last.” Captain’s Inn reopened on Wednesday after getting power back. “I’m feeling a bit fortunate,” she said, not at all concerned about the tiki bar. “It was a sore site to see on the television.” Kay lives next to the Captain’s Inn and stayed for the storm, losing power and watching the water levels rise around …

LTHS Graduate Remembered Through Scholarship Fund

Fundraiser dinner auction set for Friday, Nov. 30

Richard Grande was the type of person who helped others, according to his mother, Angela Grande, so she thought setting up a scholarship fund in his name was a fitting tribute to her son who passed away in August while working as a linesman for JCP&L. "He was a good, kind, sweet, loving person; everybody misses him," said Grande. "The sadness part of losing Richard is bad, but doing something good does help." Grande plans to give out two annual scholarships to graduating Lacey Township High School seniors — one academic, one athletic — beginning this school year. Richard was involved in sports, playing ice hockey as a youth and then wrestling and track while at Lacey Township High School, she said. "He taught kids with roller hockey and in…

Lacey Lights Boat Parade Returns Sept. 15

Prizes will be awarded to the best-dressed boats and restaurants will have specials

The Lacey Lights Boat Parade is returning a little later than usual this year. On Saturday, Sept. 15, more than 12 boats will light up the bay as they ride along the Barnegat. The annual tradition is under new management, MarineMax, after the former organizer decided to no longer run the parade. “They were going to cancel it and I found out about that,” Joe Gozdieski of MarineMax said. “I along with the local businesses decided to take it over.” MarineMax, Captain’s Inn, the Forked River House, Rella’s, Rick’s Marina, Sea Tow, Latitudes, Townsend’s Marina and Tide’s End Marina banded together to continue the Lacey tradition. The parade will begin at sundown. “We want anyone and everyone,” Gozdieski said. “We need boats to celebrate.” The …

Lacey Township Historical Society to Mark 50th Anniversary with Series of Events

Celebratory dinner will be held March 24

The Lacey Township Historical Society was formed in 1962 when three local residents sought to turn the town's old schoolhouse into a museum. This year the society is celebrating its 50 years of dedication to the preservation of the township's history with a series of events, starting with a Celebratory Dinner on March 24 at the Captain's Inn Restaurant on Lacey Road in Forked River. The old schoolhouse had been vacant for more than six years when Stella Wilbert, Elizabeth "Betty" Grant and Charlotte Lane set out on their quest to preserve the building, said Pat Grant, Second Vice President of the Historical Society and a 57-year resident of the township. "Stella asked people for donations of indigenous artifacts," said Grant, whose husband…

Mayor Quinn Talks Business at Chamber Meeting

Mayor addresses local Chamber of Commerce about township finances, Master Plan, the local business sector and more

At the Lacey Township’s regular meeting of its Chamber of Commerce, Mayor Gary Quinn was in attendance to speak with roughly 20 members of the local business community at the Captain’s Inn on East Lacey Road. Quinn explained that being mayor for 2 years and on the governing body for nine years in total has given him a perspective on the economic state of the town. “We try to run the township like a business. It’s been good, but we’ve had some difficult years as well,” Quinn said, who added that making cuts and changes in the municipal operations is part of the normal course of business. “But it’s difficult and not always accepted,” Quinn stated. That remark was in reference to how municipal operations have been reduced, such as in the case…
