Police blotter from May 5 to May 16
From rings and tools to traffic signs and tip jars, thefts plagued Lacey Township the past two weeks. One of the more recent events was when John Sabie, 24, of Lanoka Harbor was arrested after police said he stole tip jars from Anthony’s Pizza and Schiano’s Pizzeria on May 11. Sabie stole the tip jar containing $40 from Anthony’s on Route 9 and then stole the tip jar containing $100 from Schiano’s in the Lacey Mall, police officials said. Upon subsequent investigation, on May 12, Sabie was charged with two counts of theft of removable property, one count of possession of a hypodermic needle, and possession of drug paraphernalia. There were 20 other cases of theft over the course of the past two weeks. Lt. James Veltri provided the …

Strong effort downs Barnegat 59-37
The Lacey Lions and Barnegat Bengals each brought three game winning streaks into their Friday night showdown at Lacey Township High School, knowing that only one would walk out with their streak extended to four. Coming out of the gate early with dominating play in the paint, the Lions capitalized on controlling the rebounds to generate many second chance scoring opportunities, while playing an aggressive man-to-man defense that limited open shots for Barnegat. This allowed Lacey to go on an early 12-0 run from the middle of the first quarter to early in the second, gaining an 18-4 lead they would never relinquish en route to a 59-37 victory. Lacey head coach Ryan O’Rourke said of his team’s style of play, “We try and look to score in…

Acting Gov. Lifts Ban but Some Roads Remain Dangerous
Acting Gov. Stephen M. Sweeny has lifted the state of emergency that was declared last night due to the extreme weather conditions. Even though the state of emergency has been lifted, roads are still unsafe. County officials declared this blizzard as one of the worst in three decades. Lacey Township accumulated 28 inches of snow but wind gusts of over 30 MPH, caused already plowed roads to become completely covered again. The drifting continues to make roads hazardous but according to Mayor Quinn, no major accidents have been reported. The township was struggling to clear the roads, as trucks were breaking down and getting stuck in the deep layer of snow forcing Lacey to bring in additional loaders. Mayor Quinn said the main roads were …

It was slow going in the township this afternoon as four-wheel drives faced off with snow plows in an uphill battle to clear the roads. As of 3 p.m. some roads hadn’t been touched while some of those that were plowed were still almost impassable. Most main roads, particularly Lacey Road and Route 9, were clear but packed down with a layer of powdery snow. Moisture that lay under the snow was expected to freeze tonight making travel this evening treacherous, according to weather reports. The 30+ mph winds churned up snow all day, blinding sled riders and those choosing to walk and avoid the treacherous roads. On the bright side, Lacey looked beautiful. The contrast of the lakes and marinas against the snow, sun and blue …
Plows continue to break down and get stuck
The township plows are still struggling to clear off the roads. According to Mayor Gary Quinn, the main roads and county roads are not in bad shape but people should still avoid driving. "The township is fighting a very difficult battle right now," Quinn said. The Public Works Department worked through the night but had difficulty keeping up with the volume of snow. Many township trucks broke down and got stuck, forcing the town to bring in more loaders, Quinn said. Public Works will be working through tonight but it will most likely take three to four days before the roads are passable, Quinn said. Despite the dangerous state of the roads, people are still driving. No serious accidents have been reported. "Even in a state of emergency, …

Transportation Services Respond, Implement Changes to Schedules
Acting Gov. and Senate President Stephen M. Sweeny declared a state of emergency throughout New Jersey due to the dangerous weather conditions. "The first action I took as Acting Governor was to receive a complete briefing on the state's storm preparations from the State Police, the Commissioner of Transportation and the Governor's Chief of Staff," Sweeny said. "We have been monitoring the situation throughout the afternoon. Based on current conditions and the forecast I am declaring a state of emergency throughout New Jersey." Travelling is hazardous as state police reported more then 70 accidents on the Garden State Parkway and New Jersey Turnpike from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. In several areas of the Parkway, the speed limit has been …
Snowfall steady now, will pick up later
The snow is falling steadily in Lacey Township but weather advisories have predicted the blizzard to pick up around 2 p.m., Mayor Gary Quinn said. "We are anticipating the worst and hoping for the best right now but it doesn't look too promising," Quinn said. With drivers out and about, the main roads have remained fairly clear but the back roads are starting to get slippery, Quinn said. As of now, the Department of Public Works has not done much to clear the roads since this is only the start of the blizzard. "We are anticipating it being a long storm and they are on an as need basis at this point," Quinn said. "Once he storm passes through [Public Works] will be out on the roads. During the storm it's a hit or miss situation not …
A list of local stores remaining open throughout snow storm
Some local stores will leave their "Come in, We're Open" signs on their entrances despite the blizzard. If you plan to stock up, try the following places. For emergency services, your best bet would be to call 911. The Manahawkin Urgent Care will remain open today but is not taking anymore patients. Whether the urgent care will open tomorrow has yet to be decided.
NJ Transit hopes to offset weather delays with systemwide cross-honoring system.
New Jersey Transit says it's taking steps to minimize delays as the winter's first storm hits northern New Jersey. To give customers additional travel options during the storm, NJ Transit will offer full systemwide cross-honoring starting at noon Sunday and continuing all day on Monday, Dec. 27, enabling NJ Transit customers to use their tickets or passes on alternate travel modes–rail, bus or light rail. A customer who normally takes the bus from a New Jersey location into the Port Authority Bus Terminal could instead take the train New York Penn Station, the agency said by way of example. The opposite is true as well–you can use a train ticket for the bus. But NJ Transit does advise planning for the possibility of delays, if the impact …
