A confirmed case of pertussis, more commonly known as whooping cough, was reported at the Mill Pond School, the school district reported last week. More information on pertussis can be found here. Superintendent Dr. Sandra Brower notified the community by letter on Dec. 14: Dear Parent/Guardian: Today a confirmed case of pertussis (whooping cough) was reported to the Mill Pond School. Pertussis begins with cold symptoms and a cough, which become much worse over 1-2 weeks. Symptoms usually include a long series of coughing fits followed by a whooping noise; however, older children, adults and very young infants may develop symptoms differently. Tdap vaccine offered in Toms River and Manahawkin
Ocean County Health Department has set up Tdap vaccination clinics at both the OCHD’s main site at 175 Sunset Ave., Toms River, and its Southern site at 333 Haywood Road, Manahawkin, in the Stafford Business Park off of exit 63 on the Garden State Parkway South. Ocean County has seen an elevated number of cases of pertussis, also known as whooping cough. The Tdap vaccine is a combination of three vaccines that protect against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis. Although children are vaccinated against whooping cough, immunity to this disease fades and as a consequence, whooping cough is still common in teenagers and adults. Outbreak focused in the northern part of the county, officials say
Officials have confirmed 14 cases of whooping cough in Ocean County, and are investigating at least three more. The Ocean County Health Department advised residents last week to update their vaccines and practice good hand-washing techniques after identifying a local outbreak. The outbreak has been primarily focused in the northern part of the county, especially Lakewood, said health department spokeswoman Leslie Terjesen. But cases are also being seen in neighboring communities and around the county as a whole. Children have come down with cases of whooping cough, a bacterial infection of the lungs, in other portions of the county, Terjesen said. Lisa, Do a little reading. Dr. Wakefield was found guilty of fudging his data to fit his agenda. He lied about the doing extensive studies (he only observed about 14 kids) and he was evasive about his main funding coming from attornies with an eye to suing drug companies.
