Red Night Out: Drug Abuse Hits Home in Lacey [VIDEO]

Nearly 800 people attended the township-wide event to educate the community on drug abuse

It started with marijuana, followed by pills; then cocaine and eventually heroin. Steve Willis’ son Mark had gone from being “wonderful” to only caring about his next fix. He had gone from boy scouts to a courtroom at just 14, as his father pressed criminal charges for possession of drugs, criminal mischief and theft. “If addiction is in my family, and all the madness that flows from it, it may be in yours,” said Willis at Lacey Township’s Red Night Out, an event created to educate the community on drug abuse. Willis, a local attorney, struggled to effectuate a meaningful consequence for his son. He tried punishment, talked to teachers and had family counseling. One ironic thing tho .... When someone gets into trouble, it is the attornies that will start mailing prospective clients so that they can attempt to lessen the consequences through the court system. We need to stop letting money rule the courts and allow justice -- fair and effectual to all -- and the desire to turn these people around ..... let these be the ruling elements of the court system.   more ›

Anti-Drug/Alcohol Task Force Hopes to Establish RX Drop Box

The task force hopes to roll out programs in the coming year

A community task force formed to combine efforts to fight drug and alcohol problems in Lacey Township is moving ahead with plans to set up a permanent drop box at the township police station for unwanted or expired prescription drugs. Lacey Township Municipal Alliance Chairperson Jean Tymczyszyn said the group is looking for approval of the drop box from the state Attorney General's office. "Last time we had a one-day drop off, we got 150 pounds of pills," said Tymczyszyn, at Monday night's Municipal Alliance meeting. "Logistics, monitoring and disposal are issues." Task Force Being Formed To Tackle Drug and Alcohol Issues in Lacey Township

Coordinated effort led by Municipal Alliance

For months, members of the Lacey Township Municipal Alliance talked about the need to partner with other groups in town to make real inroads in the fight against drug and alcohol abuse. Now, that dream is coming closer to reality, according to Alliance Coordinator Heather Scanlon. Scanlon said she's met with the police chief, the school superintendent and religious leaders in town and they've agreed to participate in a new task force. "We've faced frustration dealing with it as a group on our own and feeling we weren't getting participation from parents," said Scanlon. "The task force will have weight behind it." You will never stop the drug problem in the schools or even have an impact on it if you do not get the kids involved and allow them to confidentially filter the flow of information to the task force. many of the kids in the schools are sick and tired of the drugs and are more than willing to point the administration to the offenders.
