PHOTOS: Some Lacey Streets Remain Flooded After Early Morning Storm

Areas of Lacey that already sustained heavy damage due to Hurricane Sandy, took on water again

Some Lacey streets remain flooded after the early morning storm. "Lacey Township experienced tidal flooding in the low-lying areas of the township along the bay-front during the early morning hours," Capt. David Paprota said. The township has reported some downed wires and power outages. As of 1 p.m., there were less than 50 JCP&L customers without power in Lacey, according to the power outage map. Areas that sustained heavy damage from Hurricane Sandy once again took on water. Streets, such as Laurel Boulevard, were covered in mud and some debris as well. One Lanoka Harbor resident reported flood damage to a vehicle, Paprota said. High tide in Forked River occurred between 5 and 6 a.m., Paprota said. The next high tide is expected between…

Roller Girls Recover in Championship Style

How the Jersey Shore Roller Girls fought back from the devastation of Hurricane Sandy to help the region and each other get back on track.

Must the show go on? There’s a saying in the entertainment business that “the show must go on,” but it’s not always true. For the Jersey Shore Roller Girls, the region's all-female flat-track roller derby league, the decision whether or not to cancel its 2012 championship bout after Hurricane Sandy was a tough one. The bout had been scheduled to follow the Asbury Park tree lighting ceremony at Convention Hall on November 24, but the venue wasn’t cleared for use until a week before the event date and there was no time to advertise. Worse still, at least nine of the league’s seventy skaters suffered serious damage to their homes, said JSRG board member Bash N. Onya. “We’ve done this after-Thanksgiving game since 2008 and it’s quickly become …

It was a good decision to have the championship. We in the "bleachers" knew the devastation we locals went through it too in various degrees. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who are still recovering. Visiting family members and other spectators that came that night were as boistrous as we were! I had the pleasure of sitting near some in-town-for-Thanksgiving ladies, and explained to them …   more ›

Down With Thanksgiving Shopping! Maybe.

Is the retail encroachment into Thanksgiving day worth fighting?

I’ve been known to be a party pooper, a real Debbie downer (sorry Debbie) when it comes to certain kinds of indulgences. Keep this in mind if you keep reading. Black Friday. Fine. After a day of gastronomic excess, we launch into a season of consumer spending that many of us will regret well into 2013. But a Black Friday that begins on Thanksgiving Thursday is just too much, or is it?  The argument was succinctly made by P.C. Richard & Son (on Facebook, of course) that retailers who chose to open their doors on Thanksgiving “show no respect to their employees and families, and are in total disrespect of family values in America.”  I’m inclined to agree, though the invocation of “family values” is questionable now that the phrase has been …

Rumana and Donna Simon, have prepared legislation for introduction on Monday that the sponsors say will aid ratepayers during weather emergencies, sent a letter to Assembly Telecommunications and Utilities Committee Chairman Upendra Chivukula to launch a bipartisan effort to protect ratepayers. Strong Storm Leaves Residents Coping with Damage [PHOTOS]

Police and residents continue to address downed wires and trees

Residents throughout Lacey are coping with property damage after strong winds swept through the area Tuesday night. Last night, more than 700 residents were without electricity. As of 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, approximately 41 residents were still experiencing a power outage, according to JCP&L’s power outage map. Trucks carrying tree branches and some with telephone poles traveled the streets of Lacey this afternoon. Fran of Spruce Street, who declined to provide her last name, was watching So You Think You Can Dance when her house began to shake and the windows rattled Tuesday night. She and her husband sought shelter in the bathroom when they heard a loud bang. A tree had uprooted and struck their house. The tree still rests on the newly …
