Return to Popcorn Park a 'Sad Day' for Black Lab Mix

Owner dropped Errol off Thursday, complaining that he wants to run and play too much

Errol was just turned back into the Associated Humane Societies at Popcorn Park Thursday, after being adopted out for six months. “This is a sad day for our good friend Errol,” Sandy Hickman of Popcorn Park said. His owner said that he “can’t tolerate Errol any longer,” Hickman said. The owner complained that, “all he wants to do is run and play, and he pulls the leash out of my hand while being walked” and that, “a .22 and a shovel are what would fix Errol,” Hickman said. “Obviously this was far from the right home that we wanted for Errol,” she said. Errol, a 7-year-old black lab mix, originally came to Popcorn Park in the fall of 2010. He waited almost two years to be adopted. He arrived from down south with a group of seven other dogs…

Pug 'Completely Comatose' Upon Popcorn Park Arrival

Although Prissy has medical needs, she is now thriving and looking for a new home

Prissy, an eight-year-old pug, arrived at the Associated Humane Societies in January “completely comatose,” said Sandy Hickman of Popcorn Park, a Forked River based rescue facility. “We received a call in January from a distressed person that needed to have her deceased pet removed from her Keansburg home,” she said. “We dispatched our Animal Control Officer to the home and when we went to retrieve the pet, he realized something just wasn’t right.” The home was in disarray, the owner was disheveled and Prissy was breathing. The owner had explained that the dog must have eaten something and died several hours earlier. Upon noticing Prissy was still alive, the Animal Control Officer immediately brought her to the veterinarian at Popcorn Park…

Adoption Alert: Mandy, a 10-Year-Old Yorkie

To adopt Mandy, stop by Popcorn Park at 1 Humane Way to fill out an application

Mandy may be a 10 year old Yorkie but she is "young at heart," said Sandy Hickman of Popcorn Park. Mandy arrived at Popcorn Park's animal shelter after her owner moved out of state and could not take her along. Mandy first was given to a friend of her owners who also could not keep Mandy. "Mandy is a tiny little Yorkie with a big heart. She just loves life, and loves everyone in it. She is such a sweet, easy going girl with such a pleasant personality, that it's impossible not to love her," Hickman said. Hickman described Mandy as quiet, well behaved, very polite and super friendly. Unfortunately, a health issue had been neglected by her original owner. Those interested in adopting her will have to speak with Popcorn Park's veterinarian …

Adoption Alert: 'Friendly' Belgian Hare

To adopt Scooter, stop by Popcorn Park at 1 Humane Way to fill out an application

Scooter, a two-and-a-half year old male Belgian hare, was brought to the Associated Humane Societies at Popcorn Park when he was found on the front porch of a home. The resident who found Scooter searched for the original owner, but when no one claimed him, it was time to find new home. Scooter was described as "very sweet" and "friendly." He does not mind being handled, and welcomes attention. "He occupies his time by munching on fresh veggies, pushing around his hay to keep his area clean and greeting visitors as they come to see him," Sandy Hickman from Popcorn Park said. To adopt Scooter, stop by Popcorn Park at 1 Humane Way to fill out an application. For more information call 609-693-1900.

Adoption Alert: Della Adopted and Returned to Popcorn Park 40 Pounds Heavier

Della was originally from a shelter in Georgia, where she arrived as a stray

Della, a 7-year-old yellow lab/vizsla mix, originally arrived at the Popcorn Park shelter with a group from Georgia. When Della, who arrived at a shelter in Georgia as a stray, came to Forked River she was thin and ill with heartworm. Della got adopted and was in a home for several months before she was returned for “jumping on people.” The lab mix not only needed some cleaning up and care upon her arrival, but she returned 40 pounds heavier. Della is described as loving, playful, energetic and well behaved. She is house trained and walks well on a leash. She would be good with kids, but no cats. Those interested in adopting Della, who has another dog, could set up a play date to see how they interact with each other. To adopt Della, stop …

Popcorn Park Helps Rescue Those Pets 'Left Behind'

Local nonprofit animal rescue organization is collecting donations for Hurricane Sandy rescue animals as well as those who need assistance caring for pets after the storm

Popcorn Park continues to assist in locating pets and reuniting them with their owners after Hurricane Sandy, General Manager John Bergmann said. “We started getting calls to get animals people left behind,” he said. The nonprofit animal rescue organization has traveled across the Jersey Shore, including Seaside and Long Beach Island, to save everything from hamsters and ferrets to dogs and cats. “They’re still rescuing now,” he said. “They’ll be doing it for a while.” By the time Popcorn Park arrived at the homes, the storm surge from Sandy receded. Dogs were territorial, he said. “You’re a stranger,” he said. “They’re scared. Their owners aren’t there.” Some of the homes were severely damaged and there were times they had to go through …

Bow Wow Luau to Help Find Rescue Dogs Forever Homes

Camp Bow Wow of Lacey is holding its first annual luau adoption event and fundraiser Sunday, July 29

Camp Bow Wow of Lacey will hold its first annual luau adoption event and fundraiser on Sunday, July 29 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The doggie daycare and boarding facility recently started a foster dog program, partnering with local animal rescue organizations, which encouraged the business to hold the adoption event, Camp Scout Christina Jackson said. “These organizations’ volunteers work tirelessly and selflessly to help animals in need,” she said. “Unfortunately there are a lot of dogs that have to be rescued and are in desperate need of loving homes, so what better way to help them then host a fun dog-friendly event where these dogs can meet their potential forever families.” Local animal rescues participating in the luau include Blind …
