NRC Asked to Revise Plans, Regulations to Consider Post-Sandy Conditions

The NRC is 'failing to enforce its regulations,' anti-nuclear advocates said on a teleconference with the federal agency

Anti-nuclear advocates and concerned citizens participated in a teleconference Thursday with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission requesting the federal agency to revise regulations and take action against Oyster Creek Generating Station in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. “We’re here because we have serious concerns about the ongoing safety of the Oyster Creek nuclear power plant,” said attorney Richard Webster of Public Justice, who submitted a petition on behalf of Beyond Nuclear, the New Jersey Environmental Federation (NJEF) and Grandmothers, Mothers and More for Energy Safety (GRAMMES). “The NRC appears to be failing to enforce its regulations and that lack of enforcement is leading to a lack of adequate protection at the power plant…

NRC to Hold Public Meeting on Anti-Oyster Creek Petition

The public can phone in to listen to the meeting on Thursday, Jan. 3

A public meeting will be held on Thursday, Jan. 3 on the recent petition submitted by anti-nuclear advocates on the impact of Hurricane Sandy to Oyster Creek Generating Station, Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokesman Neil Sheehan said. The petition, filed in November, called on Gov. Chris Christie to intervene and ensure that “major flaws” at Oyster Creek Generating Station are addressed prior to the nuclear power plant returning online. Oyster Creek began a regular refueling and maintenance outage on Oct. 22 and returned to service on Dec. 4. The petition submitted by Grandmothers, Mothers and More for Energy Safety, the New Jersey Environmental Federation and Beyond Nuclear, sought to keep the nuclear plant offline until safety measures…

Advocates Call on NRC, Governor to Address Oyster Creek Concerns Post-Sandy

A petition has been filed to the NRC to address Hurricane Sandy-related concerns prior to permitting Oyster Creek Generating Station to return to service

Anti-nuclear advocates have filed emergency legal proceedings with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and have made an appeal to Gov. Chris Christie to intervene and ensure that "major flaws" at Oyster Creek Generating Station are addressed prior to the nuclear power plant returning online. “We’ve just been through a heart wrenching catastrophe with Sandy,” said Janet Tauro, chair of the Board of Directors of the NJ Environmental Federation (NJEF) and founder of Grandmothers, Mothers and More for Energy Safety (GRAMMES). “So many have lost their homes, been displaced, been made physically ill by the aftermath of the devastation that to add the greater risk of a Fukushima radioactive event to the mix would simply be inhuman.” The …

Township Committee to Discuss Skate Park Policies

Residents show concern that the skate park might be shut down as it has been chained closed

Adam Kochanowski sat on a bench across from the Gille Skate Park on Wednesday afternoon, reminiscing the years when he spent time there daily. Kochanowski, 14, was concerned over recent rumors that the skate park would be shut down. “I used to be here every day in Lacey,” he said. The former Lacey resident and current Point Pleasant resident believes the problem lays with bikes. The bikers didn’t cause problems, Kochanowski said, but according to skate park rules, bikes and scooters are prohibited and police occasionally monitor the area. “They’ve been saying they’re going to close it down for a while,” he said. “It always reopens.” Township Administrator Veronica Laureigh could not elaborate on the skate park before the township committee…

Either open it to ALL (even if it requires paying and better supervision and not the nonsense ride- by cop anti- non-locals enforcement) or SHUT IT DOWN!!!! The township is asking for trouble dangling a carrot in the rabbit faces of non-locals, especially that it's the best skate park in Ocean County, aside from Brick.   more ›
