Freeholder Director Sidesteps Question of Interest in Sheriff's Post

Kelly has expressed interest in becoming head of the Ocean County sheriff's department in the past

Does John P. Kelly want to be the next Ocean County sheriff? It's a question Kelly, who just took over as freeholder director, won't answer. "I am committed to doing the best job possible as freeholder director," Kelly said in front of county employees and others as the Ocean County Board of Freeholders prepared to go into closed session Wednesday at the biweekly preboard meeting, in response to a question. But it's common knowledge among party insiders that Kelly has wanted to be sheriff long before longtime Sheriff William L. Polhemus died in December. Kelly - who has no law enforcement background - was already interested in the position when former Undersheriff Wayne L. Rupert died suddenly in October 2011. Polhemus appointed William T…

NJ Watchdog: Polhemus, Sommeling Among 51 County Police Officials 'Double Dipping'

Investigation finds law enforcement officials collectively earning $3.7M a year in salary while drawing $5.4M annually in pensions

Ocean County Sheriff William Polhemus and Undersheriff William Sommeling are among 51 county law enforcement officials in New Jersey who still receive salaries while also drawing a pension, according to a report by New Jersey Watchdog. The investigation found that 17 sheriffs and 34 undersheriffs collectively earn $9.1 million a year "double dipping" — $3.7 million in retirement pay on top of $5.4 million in salaries — while utilizing loopholes under Gov. Chris Christie's pension reforms. Locally, Polhemus earns $165,941 annually, with $43,272 of his compensation in pension costs. Sommeling makes $116,540 a year, with $27,540 coming from his pension. New Jersey Watchdog reports that participants in police pension plans qualify for "special…

County GOP Taps Polhemus To Run For Another Term As Sheriff

Republican organization picks incumbents Little and Bartlett to run for re-election to freeholder board

One more time. Eighty-three-year-old longtime Ocean County Sheriff William L. Polhemus wanted to run for another term and the Ocean County Republican Organization granted his wish last week. "The sheriff to my knowledge has been running a good operation over there," Ocean County Republican Chairman George R. Gilmore said today. "The sheriff has said that he wants to run." When asked if he thought Polhemus was up to another term, Gilmore replied "I see no impediment to his running and winning." Polhemus has served as Ocean County Sheriff since 1985. Prior to that, he was police chief of the Seaside Heights Police Department and served 35 years in the department. He will be challenged by Democrat George "Bob" Armstrong, 68, whose career in …

Polhemus Picks Sommeling For Undersheriff

83-year-old Polhemus wants another term as sheriff; Freeholder John P. Kelly says he will not oppose him

Longtime Ocean County Sheriff William L. Polhemus has tapped his former undersheriff to replace Wayne R. Rupert, who died in October. William T. Sommeling's appointment is slated to be announced at the Ocean County Board of Freeholders meeting Wednesday, said Mary McCue, Polhemus' secretary. Sommeling, 77, previously served as Polhemus' undersheriff for many years. Polhemus could not be reached for comment this afternoon, McCue said. "The sheriff is unable to come to the phone," she said. "He's tied up." Sources say Polhemus, 83, wants to run for another term as Ocean County sheriff in 2012. Freeholder John P. Kelly said this afternoon that he has been interested in the sheriff's position for years, but only if and when Polhemus decides to…
