Making Math Matter: Lacey Math Teacher Goes to Washington

Matt Geiger Scores High for Investigative Approach to Teaching

Lanoka Harbor resident and Lacey Township High School math teacher Mark Geiger was honored in Washington D.C. after receiving the 2010 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics. From Dec. 14 to Dec. 17, Geiger joined 103 teachers in grades 7-12 for a recognition program at the nation's capital. Geiger was distinguished for his student-centered, "real world" math instruction. Geiger said the program introduced him to many “wonderful” teachers from across the country who plan to establish a network so they can “share innovative ideas in mathematics education.” During the 4-day event, the teachers participated in recognition and professional development activities that included meetings with Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and …
