FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS ROUNDUP: Unbeaten Lacey Advances to Semifinals

NJSIAA playoffs roundup

Results of first-round games in the NJSIAA football playoffs, compiled from app.com and nj.com: Lacey 45, Toms River South 31: Kyle Spatz scored two touchdowns late in the game as the undefeated Lions pulled away from the Indians (4-5) at last in the first round of the South Jersey Group IV playoffs. Lacey (10-0) had taken a 31-17 lead in the fourth quarter when Christian Tutela caught a pass from Conor Davies for a 19-yard touchdown. But the Indians responded with touchdowns from Russell Messler and Otis Kearney, who scored on a 31-yard run, his third touchdown of the game, to tie it at 31. That’s when Spatz took over, scoring from 14 yards out and adding an 8-yard TD to lift Lacey into the semifinals. The Lions, who do not have a …

Lacey's Vircillo Joining Shore Football Hall of Fame

Lions coach called 'a role model' to his players

Keith Elias remembers the first time he met Lou Vircillo. "I was in Pop Warner, and he came to see the game," said Elias, reflecting on his relationship with Vircillo, Lacey's only head football coach, who is being inducted into the Shore Football Coaches Foundation Hall of Fame on Thursday evening. "He liked me as a player, and he gave me workout advice." "There's memory after memory," Elias said by phone late Monday afternoon. "It's hard to pick one memory when you've spent a lifetime with someone." Vircillo will be honored at halftime of the All Shore 35th Gridiron Classic, which pits recently graduated high school senior football players from Monmouth County against seniors from Ocean County. The game is set for a 7 p.m. kickoff at …

Lacey Seniors Savor Last Days on the Diamond Together

Group of four wind up time that began in tee ball, with eye to the future

They remember the days when all that mattered was getting ice cream at Mrs. Walker’s after the game, when winning was barely an afterthought. Now, they’re just weeks from graduating from high school, and they’re still together. Victor Kochanowski, Ryan Hanula, Brian Emerson and Anthony Marotta are now seniors at Lacey High School, playing baseball for the Lions and pondering futures that will take them down separate paths. “How old were we, 5?” asked Emerson, a left-handed pitcher and first baseman. “Yeah, 5,” said Hanula, a right-handed pitcher and right fielder. “Back then, you just played to play the game,” said Marotta, a second baseman and shortstop. “I remember my mom telling me I didn’t like tee ball,” said Kochanowski, a center …

Lions Latest: Boys, Girls Look For Success on the Diamond

A look back to the prior week's happenings in Lacey Township High School sports, along with a look ahead to the next week.

Baseball: Returning home from spring break in Florida, where the Lions went 2-2 against teams from all across the country, spirits were high in Lacey. Lacey hit a bump in the road with a three-game losing streak this week, but snapped it with an important divisional win over Pinelands Regional on Friday. In three games this week returning from Florida, the Lions went 1-2, bringing their record to 3-7 and 1-3 in the division. With sophomore Eric Reitmeyer bringing home the winning run against Pinelands Regional on Friday with a walk-off hit, the Lions hope it can spark them, as despite being 1-3 in the division, they are only two wins off behind division-leading Manchester with a big week coming up. On Monday and Wednesday, the Lions will …

Lacey Cheer Team Aims for National Title

Twenty-member team of girls and boys competing in event Saturday televised by ESPN

While many of their classmates were bundling up to head to school Thursday morning, the members of the Lacey co-ed cheerleading team were on the practice floor, running through their routine. By the time their classmates were heading to second period, the cheer team was finishing its two-hour practice and heading out into the Florida sunshine. But the trip won’t be relaxing. “This is no vacation,” said Kelly Zuccarelli, coach of the Lacey High School co-ed cheerleading team. “We are going there for a purpose. We want to win.” And they believe they can: the Lacey team is in Florida for the fourth straight year, competing in the National High School Cheerleading Championships at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Kissimmee, Fla., …

Lacey Wrestlers Advance to Section Semifinals

Lions face Toms River South on Wednesday

Lacey heavyweight Jake Fernandez pinned Seneca's Tim Will in 38 seconds to send the Lions into the NJSIAA South Jersey Group III team wrestling semifinals with a 38-28 victory in Lacey. After Lex Knapp recorded a 50-second pin at 220 pounds to give the Lions a 32-28 lead, all Fernandez needed to do was avoid giving up anything more than a decision to Will in the final bout of the match for Lacey to win. Fernandez's pin put an emphatic end to the match, however, sending Lacey to a semifinal matchup with top-seeded Toms River South on Wednesday night in Toms River. Lacey held a 20-10 lead after winning five of the first seven bouts, with Connor Garrity recording a pin early in the second period at 120 pounds. But Seneca rallied, taking the …

Lacey's Flannery Signs with Seton Hall

Lions' cross country captain set to run for the Pirates

When Ryan Flannery took up running a few summers ago, he wasn't at all sure he would like it. "I was big into basketball my freshman year, and I was looking for a sport to get myself in shape for basketball," the Lacey High School cross country captain said. "My neighbor, Andy Hopper, suggested I look at cross country." The idea of distance running didn't thrill him, Flannery said: "I saw myself more as a sprinter." But Hopper encouraged Flannery to give it a try and helped the young man start training the summer before his sophomore year. Cross country turned out to be perfect fit for a young man best described as tenacious. "When you're in the middle of a race and you reach the point where you just want to give up, you have to have that …
