But many credit John McConnell, an activist who proposed the day at a National UNESCO Conference in 1969, with founding Earth Day. It wasn't the last great storm. But, over the past five decades, and before Hurricanes Irene and Sandy, it was probably the biggest. On December 11, 1992, an intense nor’easter came ashore along New Jersey's coastline and remained there for three days. Strong winds hit upward to 80 miles per hour, and massive amounts of snow overwhelmed businesses and schools. Flooding ravaged coastal towns. Toms River schools were closed a week due to the snowfall. Much of Long Beach Island, and nearly all of Sea Bright, was under water. Celebratory dinner will be held March 24
The Lacey Township Historical Society was formed in 1962 when three local residents sought to turn the town's old schoolhouse into a museum. This year the society is celebrating its 50 years of dedication to the preservation of the township's history with a series of events, starting with a Celebratory Dinner on March 24 at the Captain's Inn Restaurant on Lacey Road in Forked River. The old schoolhouse had been vacant for more than six years when Stella Wilbert, Elizabeth "Betty" Grant and Charlotte Lane set out on their quest to preserve the building, said Pat Grant, Second Vice President of the Historical Society and a 57-year resident of the township.
