Coldest temperatures of the season: an icy Tuesday and possible snow
The week will bring some of the coldest temperatures this winter. There are two areas of concern: a system coming into the area that will bring some very messy weather and dangerous roadways. The weather system should begin as snow overnight but transition to sleet and freezing rain for the morning commute on Tuesday, causing potentially icy roads. Friday may bring a possible plowable amount of snow as a low-pressure system rides along the coast. forecasters are uncertain what Friday's system may bring.
After numerous near knock-out blows, winter will be providing another round of hazardous conditions this week.
If this were a boxing ring, winter has been throwing us punch after punch. After surviving winter’s near knock-out blow with its Dec. 26 massive blizzard and making it through a weekend full of disruptive snowfalls there is another powerful system heading our way. Currently, this storm system is producing crippling ice problems in the south as it has its eyes set on the northeast next. As this storm develops and strengthens along the New Jersey coast we will have to keep a close eye on the exact track of the storm. This will determine whether or not mixing of snow, sleet, and rain may be a factor. If no mixing occurs, snow totals will be higher (possibly around 6 inches or more). If mixing occurs, snow totals may be kept down to around 3-6…

Well, you need to the know some biases between both models-the GFS is scaled differently than the NAM(100km resoultion compared to 12km resolution with the NAM). The NAM model only goes out to 84 hours while the GFS goes out 384(but obviously gets worse after day 4). Usually the NAM overdoes precip, while the GFS has its good days and bad days(it has become increasingly better the past few months…   more ›
