Second Forum on District's Random Drug Testing Slated for Feb. 5

A symposium, "Raising and Educating a Drug Free Community," will also be held on Wednesday, Feb. 27

A second community forum on the random drug testing program that the school district is considering will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. in the High School Media Center. Earlier this month, the school board held its first forum in which school staff presented research and answered questions that concerned residents had regarding the program that the district is aiming to start in the fall of 2013. “It’s a shame that the district even has to consider this but it’s time,” resident Regina Discenza said at Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting, adding that drug use is rampant in Lacey Township. Discenza recently met a woman with a son her age, she said. At 47 the son has a serious heart problem due to drug use and is no longer eligible for…

Agreed Carol!!! Parents influence their children in many ways but when it comes to drugs and being a teenager it is very difficult. Teenagers will break away from their parents ... many or I will even say most parents that have a teenager addicted to these pain killers then to Heroine are not at fault! Letter: Drug Testing in Schools Will Hinder Open Communication

New Jersey Policy Associate for the Drug Policy Alliance asks the Lacey Township School District to consider implementing an educational program rather than randomly drug testing its students

To the Editor: I strongly urge the Lacey school district to reconsider its proposal to implement a random drug testing program for all students who participate in extracurricular activities (Super: 'We're Losing Kids' to Lacey's Drug Problem, Jan. 9). Random student drug testing is opposed by the American Academy of Pediatrics' and its efficacy is not supported by scientific literature. Moreover, school administrators should consider the potential unintended and harmful consequences that may result from enforcing such a policy, such as the destruction of trust between students and adults at school and the hindrance of open communication about important and potentially life-threatening issues adolescents face. Involuntary drug testing may …

"Involuntary drug testing may also actually deter participation in athletic activities, which are a proven means of helping students stay out of trouble with drugs." -If you don't do drugs, then you have nothing to worry about. Humans have to urinate anyway, so it is not like they are going to be inconvenienced. "The thousands of dollars the school district will spend on the drug testing program …   more ›
