The school district is considering implementing a random drug testing program in 2013 for high school students in extracurricular activities and those with a parking pass
Approximately 67 percent of high school students participate in athletic activities, all who could potentially be subjected to a random drug test in the fall of 2013. Twenty-five parents and school employees participated in a community forum Tuesday night on a random drug testing program that the district is considering implementing. The purpose of the meeting was to generate questions the administration will answer in a fact sheet posted on the district website. “We have a drug problem,” Superintendent Dr. Sandra Brower said. “Random drug testing is happening here in New Jersey and it is generally used as a deterrent." The school district will hold an open community forum on the possibility of random drug testing its students on Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 7 p.m. in the high school media center. The Board of Education’s Policy Committee announced that it was considering moving forward on developing a policy that would permit random drug testing of its students in October. The concept is still under review, Vice President Eric Schubiger said at the board’s meeting in December. “We want public feedback,” he said. In a non-scientific Lacey Patch poll, 70 percent of voters would be in support of the school district randomly drug testing students. Students, teachers, parents and community members can join a district advisory committee on the proposed drug testing
The school district will be moving forward in developing a policy that will permit random drug testing of its students, Board of Education Vice President Eric Schubiger said. Resident Tony Risoli questioned the school board at its monthly meeting on Monday whether drug testing was something the district is moving forward with. “Yes we are,” President Jack Martenak said at the meeting. “It’s something we’ve talked about for years,” he said. “Drug use is a concern.” Random drug testing of students would be used as “just one tool” as Lacey continues to fight a rising drug problem, he said. I have one son who graduated from Lacey HS, one currently a freshman and two younger children who will be going to Lacey HS and my opinion....Its about time!!! Today I asked my HS son his feelings about this topic...he answered...I dont care. The reason for his answer is that he currently is smart enough to stay away from drugs. I do as most parents and talk to my kids all the time about drugs. … more ›
