Township to Apply for Two Road Improvement Grants

The grants will be submitted to the state Department of Transportation for the improvements of Sunrise Boulevard and Bayberry Village

The township Committee agreed to apply for two 2013 Department of Transportation grants. Casey Parker, Director of the Public Works department, provided the committee with a memo of three areas that he felt could use attention, Township Administrator Veronica Laureigh said. The committee agreed to apply to receive aid to make improvements to Sunrise Boulevard and a cluster of roadways in Bayberry Village. One grant will cover the paving and drainage improvements to Sunrise Boulevard from Hickory Lane to the east end as far as Spar Drive. It will complete most of the Sunrise Boulevard paving, Laureigh said. The township has been applying to receive a grant for Bayberry Village for several years. The entire area needs work from the catch …

Committee to Discuss State's Complete Streets Policy

The Complete Streets Policy would provide safe access to major roadways for all users, including bicyclists and pedestrians

The Township Committee will be considering the Planning Board’s recommendation to institute the state Department of Transportation’s Complete Streets Policy, which would provide safe access to major roadways for all users, including bicyclists and pedestrians. The Complete Streets Policy would be implemented through the planning, design, construction, maintenance and operation of new and retrofit transportation facilities within public rights of way that are federally or state funded capital programs, a resolution says. The policy would provide safe access by designing and operating a multi-modal network of transportation options. Some of which could be imposed at the Planning Board level, Board Engineer Bruce Jacobs said, in addition to …

Planning Board Recommends Complete Streets Policy to Committee

State policy would provide safe access to major roadways for all users, including bicyclists and pedestrians

The township Planning Board approved a resolution recommending the township adopt the state Department of Transportation's Complete Streets Policy, which would provide safe access to major roadways for all users, including bicyclists and pedestrians. “They’re trying to impose it at the Planning Board level,” board engineer Bruce Jacobs said. The resolution states that the township has conducted a comprehensive study of its land use ordinances in connection with its review of its Master Plan and thoroughly reviewed the Complete Streets Policy. The Complete Streets Policy would be implemented through the planning, design, construction, maintenance and operation of new and retrofit transportation facilities within public rights of way that …

local businessman

I am the owner of a local business. I have to say that this local government has become EXTREMELY anti-business! I have been watching the planning board and town council now for over 20 years while they have become more and more out of control. Have they seen the unemployment rate lately?? Or how many homes in this town are behind on their mortgages?? Local businesses are hanging on by a thread. …   more ›

No Timeline Set for Taylor Lane Light Installation

The state Department of Transportation has secured the necessary electrical service agreement with Lacey Township

The state Department of Transportation has secured the necessary electrical service agreement with Lacey Township to move forward with the light at Route 9 and Taylor Lane, spokesman Timothy Greeley said. Although the paperwork portion of the project has advanced, the project has not, he said. No actual physical design work has begun and a timeline for installation is not in place. “We have the formal request/application on file and it will be reviewed accordingly,” he said. “Pending the outcome of that review either the design consultant will have to address any further issues we might have, or we will begin the underground electrical design process.” The township made a formal request for a traffic light in 2011. Electrical pre-…

Route 35's Safety for Pedestrians and Bicyclists

Throughout the summer months, pedestrian and bicycle traffic increases along beach towns in Ocean County. But how safe is it?

The barrier island staple of traveling on foot or by beach cruiser bike has been a way of life for many, as natives and tourists find it easier than trying to drive Route 35 and find parking near their destination. But is the mix of resort towns, a Route 35 straightaway, and heavy pedestrian traffic a safe one? On June 17, a 17-year-old pedestrian was struck in a hit-and-run incident on a Friday night while walking south on the east side of Route 35 northbound near Silver Beach Road. The teen was critically injured. It was the most serious collision between pedestrian and vehicle known on the barrier island this season. According to Jon Dee, spokesman for the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), there are no pedestrian safety …

UPDATED: NJDOT Resurfacing Project Begins

Repaving project will stretch from Stafford to Lacey and will include improvements to intersection with Bay Avenue in Barnegat

Work will begin immediately on a long-awaited Route 9 resurfacing project in southern Ocean County, including a 1.5-mile stretch in Lacey, the New Jersey Department of Transportation announced Thursday. Approximately eleven miles of Route 9's north and southbound lanes, stretching from north of Route 72 in Stafford Township to north of Lakeside Drive in Lacey Towship, will be resurfaced as part of the $7.5 million project, according to the NJDOT. DOT spokesman Timothy Greeley said that in 2009, the Statewide Pavement Management System, which analyzes road data to pinpoint areas in need of rehabilitation, indicated the stretch of Route 9 was a candidate for resurfacing. Within a year and a half, the project was designed, advertised and …

Relief to Come to Lacey Road and Route 9

Township Officials Plan to Alleviate Bottlenecking

Lacey Township has made progress on a plan to widen the intersection of Lacey Road and Route 9. The township recently entered into an agreement with the state Department of Transportation to sell plots in the front of Community Hall and TD Bank. Township Administrator and Municipal Clerk Veronica Laureigh said the township intends to widen the road by cutting the curb back on the corner of Route 9 heading south and Lacey Road heading west. The DOT would put in a right turn lane in addition to two straight lanes to proceed south. There are plans to reconfigure the area coming from the Lacey Library by adding a left hand-turn lane only, a straight lane and a right turn lane.  There would also be a barricade from the intersection of Lacey …
