Sen. Frank Lautenberg plans to reintroduce his high-capacity magazine ban legislation in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting
Since 2008 the issuance of gun permits in Lacey Township has climbed by 168 percent, according to figures provided by Capt. David Paprota. With 20 children and six adults dead after the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, lawmakers are preparing to tackle the topic of gun control. “Unfortunately, laws are dependent upon people choosing not to break them,” Paprota said. “Laws tend to only be as good as peoples willingness to voluntarily comply. Enforcement tends to hold people accountable after they’ve broken the law.” Since 1982, there have been at least 62 mass murders carried out with firearms across the country, according to Mother Jones, an independent news organization. “A lot of it’s dependent on the compliance with the …

'We can always improve,' superintendent says of protocols and procedures
Flags fly at half staff at Lacey schools where police have had a greater presence since the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut that killed 20 children and six adults. “We know that the presence of a police officer makes people feel safer,” Superintendent Dr. Sandra Brower said. “This is especially true for children. The presence of law enforcement is also a known deterrent.” Officers from the Lacey Township Police Department regularly patrol the schools, Brower said. “We understand the concerns parents and students have in the wake of the tragic events in Connecticut so we have implemented a plan to provide a greater presence at the schools,” Cpt. David Paprota said. “This effort is being made in coordination with the …

Dear Parents and Guardians: We remain in shock and deep sadness as we are hearing the news and seeing the images coming to us from Newtown, Connecticut where an unspeakable and senseless act of violence occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School yesterday. We are all heartbroken for the families and we join a nation in mourning and in prayer. The safety of your children is our highest priority in Lacey Township. Feeling safe at school is critical for our students to learn and to be happy at school. Validate children's feelings and talk about safety.
Today's tragic school shooting in Newtown, Conn. has left many parents asking how to handle discussing events like this with children. Kristina Silvestry, MA, Counselor and Director of Berkeley Heights, NJ-based Peace of Mind Counseling and Wellness Center, said it's very important that first and foremost children feel safe. "Find out what they've heard and then really validate their feelings," Silvestry said. Silvestry advises against making dismissive statements such as "Everything's going to be fine." "You never want them to feel that they're wrong for feeling what they're feeling," she said. "You have to give them time and let them process it. Let them ask questions and parents can pull upon things like their faith or other coping …
