Berkeley Township officials say sections of South Seaside Park and Bayville flooded needlessly during Superstorm Sandy because of breaches at park
The catastrophic damage in Bayville, Pelican Island and South Seaside Park during Superstorm Sandy could have been avoided if Island Beach State Park had an intact dune system, township officials say. The Berkeley Township Council passed a resolution at a special meeting Monday night calling on the state and the Army Corps of Engineers to include Island Beach in its dune restoration project. "This is big," Township Council President James J. Byrnes said. "There are sections that are missing dunes that would impact the Bayville section." Portions of South Seaside Park, Glen Cove, Good Luck Point, Toms River Shores and even the Forked River Beach were swamped by Sandy's storm surge on Oct. 29. Some of the damage could have been avoided if …

Dennis Beach has found his life's calling
"The buzz saw snarled and rattled in the yard And made dust and dropped stove-length sticks of wood Sweet-scented stuff when the breeze drew across it"- 'Out-Out' -" by Robert Frost When the chainsaw kicked back several summers ago and struck Dennis Beach in two fingers of his left hand, he knew it was bad. A paramedic nearby ran to try and staunch the flow of blood. "It cut right into the bone," he recalled. "It was so bad they life-flew me from the fairgrounds. It didn't even resemble a finger. I really tried to get the doctor to cut it off. I'm glad he didn't listen to me." But unlike the boy in Frost's poem, Beach survived. He worked the remainder of the summer with just his right hand. "I had to make enough money for the year," he …

Study will see if road can connect to Route 9
Is there a way through the environmental minefield and diverse local interests for Western Boulevard to snake its way from Northern Boulevard to Route 9 in Berkeley Township? The federal government is putting up $550,000 to see if such a route can be found, according to Ocean County Engineer Frank Scarantino. What will follow is a “very controlled level of study of environmental and manmade constraints,’’ that may make extending the road impossible, he explained. The goal is to find an alignment that meets the standards for an Ocean County road but meets the “stakeholder concerns,’’ he said. Among them is the reluctance of Lacey Township officials to move congestion on Route 9 in Beachwood and Berkeley south a few miles on the Western Blvd…

Power may be restored over next 6 to 8 hours; St. Barnabas R.C. Church and Clara B. Worth Elementary School will be open as cooling centers throughout the night
Some township residents are in for a hot night tonight, after a truck struck a utility pole shortly after 3 p.m. this afternoon and split it in half, Sgt. James J. Smith Jr. said. Route 9 North will be closed until repairs are made to the pole, which may not be completed until tomorrow morning. That's bad news for those without power on a day where temperatures soared to over 100 degrees. "It seems like it's a pretty big job that will go one until the morning," Smith said. Smith and Mayor Jason J. Varano had a conference call with JCP&L officials a short while ago and were told a transformer on the pole had to be repaired and some circuits rebuilt. "It's a mess," Smith said. Traffic on Route 9 North will be detoured onto Sloop Creek Road …

Fair has shortened hours today from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
There's still plenty to do on the last day of the Ocean County Fair, even though the fair has shortened hours, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fair visitors can pay a flat $20 to go on all of the rides today. Admission is $6 for adults and children over 10. Children 10 and under are admitted free. Fair organizer Kitty Meyer said some visitors are surprised to learn there is an admittance fee. The fair used to be free back when it was held at Ocean County Park. "We had no tents, none of the amusements we have now," she said. But the county can no longer afford to pay for the massive tents, security and some of the entertainment, now that the fair is held at Robert J. Miller Airpark on Route 530, Meyer said. "Our tent bill alone is $20,000," she said…

Fair runs from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Ocean County Fair organizer Kitty Meyer is one happy woman. The weather forecast for Day Four of the fair is for sunny skies and low humidity, just like yesterday. "Gorgeous," Meyer said. The fair - traditionally held in mid-July - is usually marked with sweltering temperatures. Unless you're talking about last year, when heavy rains left much of the fairgrounds underwater. Today the fair will run from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. at the Robert J. Miller Airpark on Route 530. The number of events slated for today and tomorrow ramp up with the increased fair hours. Tonight visitors can have their pictures taken with several of the wolves from the Disney movie "Sorcerer's Apprentice." Other animals from Howling Woods Farm also will be on hand. The …
