'We can always improve,' superintendent says of protocols and procedures
Flags fly at half staff at Lacey schools where police have had a greater presence since the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut that killed 20 children and six adults. “We know that the presence of a police officer makes people feel safer,” Superintendent Dr. Sandra Brower said. “This is especially true for children. The presence of law enforcement is also a known deterrent.” Officers from the Lacey Township Police Department regularly patrol the schools, Brower said. “We understand the concerns parents and students have in the wake of the tragic events in Connecticut so we have implemented a plan to provide a greater presence at the schools,” Cpt. David Paprota said. “This effort is being made in coordination with the …

In the wake of the mass shooting in Newtown, CT, U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) announced plans to reintroduce high-capacity magazine ban legislation in the 113th Congress. Lautenberg’s bill, the Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device Act, would prohibit the manufacture and sale of ammunition magazines with a capacity of more than 10 rounds. It also would ban ammunition magazines that could be readily converted to accept more than 10 rounds. “In light of yet another horrific shooting tragedy, it is clearer than ever that there is no place in our communities for deadly high-capacity gun magazines and I will keep working to pass my bill to reinstate the ban on them,” Lautenberg said in a statement. “If we don't pass a high-capacity …

Dear Parents and Guardians: We remain in shock and deep sadness as we are hearing the news and seeing the images coming to us from Newtown, Connecticut where an unspeakable and senseless act of violence occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School yesterday. Newtown police say all victims' families have been notified and that officials are not yet releasing the names of the gunman or children killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
Newtown, Conn., residents reeling from the massacre of 26 people, including 20 children, at an elementary school on Friday are searching for answers about the gunman’s motive. Police have said that they are “working backwards” to piece together the “why” behind the mass shooting in this town of about 27,000 about 60 miles northeast of New York City. A noon Saturday prayer service is scheduled for St. John's Episcopal Church in Sandy Hook, a section of Newtown. Newtown Police Lt. George Sinko, the department’s public information officer, told Patch Saturday morning that investigators have no sense of what prompted the gunman to act. “There is no sense of motive at this time,” Sinko said. Though Connecticut State Police have declined to …

Christie comments on school shooting at Sea Bright news conference
Gov. Chris Christie said Friday that the people of Connecticut are struggling with an "unthinkable tragedy" after the mass shooting that left at least 25 people dead at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. "The people of the state of Connecticut have endured today just an unspeakable tragedy," Christie said at a news conference in Sea Bright. "Our hearts and prayers go out to Gov. (Dan) Malloy and to the families of each of those victims," he said. Multiple news outlets are reporting the shooter as Adam Lanza, who killed 18 students in the second deadliest school shooting in American history. His brother, Ryan Lanza of Hoboken, was initially erroneously named as the culprit. "I want the folks in Connecticut to know that all the folks …
A Connecticut town once voted the safest place to live in America experiences horrific violence in one of its elementary schools.
The man identified in media reports Friday as the shooter in the second deadliest school shooting in American history has told friends that he thinks his developmentally disabled brother may have committed the crime, Patch has learned. A close friend of Ryan Lanza who requested to not be identified told Patch that he spoke to Lanza as he was making his way home from work to Hoboken. Lanza also took to his Facebook page to rail against CNN naming him as the suspect in the shooting in Newtown, Conn. “I’m on the bus home now, it wasn’t me,” Lanza wrote. Lanza’s mother, Nancy, a school teacher, is believed to be among the dead. More than 25 people, including 18 students, died in the mass shooting. The shooter was Adam Lanza, 20, the younger …
