Lacey Girl Scout Troop Honors Community’s Unsung Heroes

Cadet Troop #84 fulfills media merit badge commitment through Unsung Heroes presentation

A local group of Girl Scouts in Lacey Township took time at yesterday afternoon to honor three members of the local community that they considered “Unsung Heroes.”

Terri Wyman, Troop Leader of Lacey’s Cadet Troop #84, said that the scouts had been working on their media-themed merit badge, which had three components: monitor, influence and cultivate. The event held Wednesday afternoon at the park signified the “influence” portion of the badge.

“One part of the badge was how we could influence the community through the media, and so the girls came up with the idea of honoring deserving heroes. They then devised a questionnaire to distribute to the community,” said Wyman.

Wyman explained that the troop received questionnaires back with 30 possible candidates to be nominated for the “Unsung Hero” award. Unable to choose just one person, the troop decided to recognize two additional candidates as “Honorable Mentions,” in addition to presenting the “Unsung Hero” award.

For the first honorable mention, scout Megan Fitzgerald read a letter penned by her aunt Marie Musmanni in tribute to her grandmother, Marge Considine.

The letter described how Megan’s grandmother was widowed at a fairly young age, and did everything she possibly could to keep her family going strong, so that her children would grow up to lead productive and wonderful lives — which is exactly what happened.

“She became determined to give us the best life possible. We continued to carry on as a normal family would,” read Megan, from her aunt’s letter. Megan then walked over to her grandmother to personally present her with the “Honorable Mention” award.

Next, scout Brionna Baumgardt called up her best friend Julia Pawlak to receive the second “Honorable Mention” award. Julia has been battling childhood leukemia, and the troop decided to select her to receive an official recognition at this event.

“She is so brave for what she has had to go through,” said Brionna.

Finally, the “Unsung Hero” award was presented in the name of Daniel Inglis, Jr. Inglis, a Lanoka Harbor Fire Company member and former police officer in Union City, .

“Daniel is well-liked, with a great sense of humor. Dan was always there to change the mood with his great personality. He gave his time to the public generously, and Dan is a true hero every single day,” said scout Sarah Fedak, who made the presentation.

Accepting the award of behalf of Inglis were his parents, Daniel Inglis Sr. and Lynn Inglis. Also in attendance were member of the to stand alongside them.

“This means so much to us and Dan. I know he will be back at his job soon,” said Inglis Sr.

After the award presentations, each honoree and their families posed for photographs besides a fire truck from the Lanoka Harbor Fire Company, along with Troop #84.
