State Senate Honors Lacey Township High School Football Team

Sen. Connors sponsors a bill in honor of the Lacey Township High School team

Two busses full of Lacey athletes traveled to Trenton to be honored on the floor of the state senate as the Lacey Township High School varsity football team was presented a resolution.

“I’m honored that the state of New Jersey sees it fit to acknowledge the efforts of the young men in our community for what they have done,” Coach Lou Vircillo said.

The resolution honored and congratulated the football team for their many accomplishments during the 2010 season.

The Lacey Lions finished their season undefeated and were South Jersey Group 3 State Champions. They were ranked number one in the Shore for the first time in school history and number five overall in the state. The team’s defense was also named “B” South Defensive Players of the Year by the Asbury Park Press for 2010.

“As a coach, I’m honored to represent a team that has done much for its community. I am happy for all the members of the team that endured and persevered through a season and through their endeavors achieved what they ultimately achieved,” Vircillo said.

Principal Will Zylinski accepted the resolution on behalf of the football team.

Sen. Christopher Connors (R-NJ), Assemblyman Brian Rumpf (R-NJ), and Assemblywoman DiAnne Gove (R-NJ) sponsored the resolution.

"Sen. Connors acknowledged and applauded the efforts of our football team and our school system and the community in general as a resident,” Vircillo said.

The seniors stood on the floor while the state senate read the resolution and applauded the team. The rest of the team stood in the gallery.

The team was able to tour the state house and participate in daily government activities.

“The young men got to see first hand at the state house how various things are done during the day of which they were a part of. All of that was beneficial in terms of educational purposes and they got to see something they have not seen before,” Vircillo said.

This was the same resolution that Connors presented to the sophomores, juniors, seniors, coaches, and managers at the team’s breakfast at Saint Pius X Catholic Church on Feb. 26.

The football team was also presented a (R-3) on Feb. 24, commending them for their achievements.
