Lacey Lions Pick Up First Win of the Season

Lacey 53, Pinelands 0

The only force to let up on Friday was the rain, as the Lacey football team manhandled Pinelands 53-0 in Tuckerton.

The Lions captured their first win of the season in dominating fashion upping their record 1-2 for the season despite heavy rainfall. Junior running back Kyle Spatz scored quick and often with four touchdowns on 14 carries for 225 yards all before halftime.

Spatz had two in the first quarter and another two in the second.
Sophomore Quarterback Tom Kelly threw a 20 yard touchdown pass to Senior running back Jake Timony. Timony had a touchdown on the ground as well. Sophomore running back Dillon Popper also scored two touchdowns each on the ground.

When asked about the expectations coming into the game, Head coach Lou Vircillo said, "We shot ourselves in the foot last week against Brick, we had opportunities after opportunities and the penalties killed us. It was very discouraging.” He went on to say, “Our kids are young and inexperienced and it will take them time to come together.”

In week two, against Brick Township, the Lions had -2 yards in the first half. “We found out quick that despite how hard we planned earlier in the week that the running game was just not going to happen and thats just stuff you can’t game plan for. We had a senior ladened team last year and thats just what happens, we had to simplify our offense a bit to make it complete, but not complex.” Vircillo said.

The Wildcats could not get any offense together going three and out most of their offensive series. With about eight minutes left to play, Lacey took a knee on their own two yard line, on fourth down, giving Pinelands possession, and on the very next play the Wildcats were sacked in their own endzone for a safety. The game was eventually called with 3:26 in the fourth quarter due to lightning.

Check back with Lacey Patch as the Lions will be facing the Manchester Hawks next Friday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m.
