TR North Boys Swimmers Second at Shore Conference Swim Championships

Central's Mahoney sets meet record in 100 breaststroke

The action in the pool was nonstop Saturday night at the Ocean County YMCA for the Shore Conference Boys Swimming Championships.

Fans and spectators came from all over the Shore to Toms River to see the best high school swimmers in the conference compete and even a few break records.

By the time the 11 events were over, Christian Brothers Academy toppled the competition, winning the team title for the 22nd time as the Colts amassed 413 points and finished in the top five in nearly every event.

Both Toms River North and Toms River South looked impressive, finishing in second and third with respective scores of 209.5 and 189.

For North, the highlight of the night was the final event, the 400 yard freestyle relay.

The Mariners' Zach Molloy, Mike Molloy, Matt Kazanowsky and Greg Hirtes teamed up and finished in 3:14.38, breaking the Shore Conference meet record of 3:16.84, which was set by another Mariners squad in 2006.

"I was ecstatic with the way we swam today," said Tom Baxter, Toms River North head coach. "We had a bit of a slow start, but we pulled through and hung in."

"Winning the 400 was a goal of ours going into the tournament, hopefully today will solidify us for seeding in the other tournaments."

The win in the 400 came on the heels of losing the 200 freestyle relay to CBA by two seconds.

Will Molloy had quite the day for the Mariners as he placed third in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:49.99, along with third in the 100-yard freestyle as well. Molloy captured second in both the 200 and 50-yard freestyle.

The Indians began strong and remained near the top, with their victory in the opening 200 yard medley relay. Nick Yodonis won the 100 butterfly and took second in the 200-yard individual medley, and his teammate Jacob Limaldi took  second in the 100 yard breaststroke.

Brick Memorial came in fifth in the tournament, with the Mustangs' best event being the 400 yard freestyle relay. Peter Kellner, Zach Milko, Andrew Richards, and Albert Yocius combined to finish in third place in 3:28.19. Milko also took third in the 100 butterfly with a time of 54.50.

Monsignor Donovan sat at seventh at day's end, sandwiched between Freehold Boro and Freehold Township. The Griffins' Brian Suantengo, Alex Tenner, George Thompson and Eric Voigtlander took fifth in the 400 freestyle relay.

Suantengo placed third in the 100 breaststroke and the same four took fourth in the 200 medley relay. Suantengo also placed fourth in the 200 individual medley.

Central Regional finished tied for eighth, thanks largely to Evan Mahoney. Mahoney broke the 100 yard breaststroke record, swimming it in 58.39.

CBA's Harrison Cefalo set the meet record of 58.90 in 2010. Mahoney also won the 100 freestyle and had enough energy to anchor Central to a seventh place showing in the 400 freestyle relay.

Closing out the top 10, was a fourth Toms River school, the Raiders of Toms River East. Brian Capozzola won the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.84 and tied for second in the 100 freestyle.

Howell placed two points ahead of Manasquan to secure the 14th position while Point Pleasant Boro followed at 16. Lacey finished 18th. Barnegat was 28th and Long Branch was 29th.
