School District Prepared For Tuesday's Opening Day

District Guide: school hours and upcoming events

Traffic may be moving a little slower than usual on Tuesday as the doors open to the Lacey schools.

“Tuesday morning we’ll be seeing a lot of yellow,” Assistant Superintendent Vanessa Clark said.

As Lacey students enjoyed their summer at camps or on the beach, the district worked to prepare the schools and staff for the upcoming school year, Superintendent Richard Starodub said.

“Our administration team worked around the clock. We all worked hard and we’re ready to go,” Clark said.

Starodub sent out a letter to the community featuring some of what the staff did this summer:

  • The custodial and grounds crew cleaned more than 650,000 square feet of school buildings and 150 acres of grounds, playgrounds and athletic fields.
  • More than 4,700 student schedules and class lists were prepared.
  • More than 300 teaching schedules, parent and staff letters, phone chains, emergency response letters, free and reduced lunch letters, plan and grade books, security and evacuation plans were prepared.
  • The transportation staff prepared 164 bus routes for 4,748 students. The district will save approximately $155,000 this year from consolidation efforts with vocational routes and non-public routes. Buses will log over 650,000 miles this school year.
  • Textbooks, supplies, and curriculum materials were ordered, received and inventoried.
  • State and Federal individual education plan requirements were met for 220 students through the summer special needs program.
  • Over 1,000 employment applications were screened and interviews were conducted for teaching and support staff replacement positions.

Administration and teaching staff participated in in elementary math, technology-driven student assessment programs, reading support via technology, and compliance with the new state bullying law, Starodub said.

The new math curriculum, Read 180 and Northwest Evaluation Association Assessment Program (NWEA) are ready to be utilized.

“This may not be what people think a summer vacation is, but it is,” Starodub said. “The efforts by all staff in this area put this summer over the top in terms of summer work and challenges, when compared to previous summers.”
