Students walked around the school's recess field for 300 consecutive minutes; more than $1,300 was raised for the American Cancer Society

Cedar Creek students walked for a consecutive 300 minutes as the school participated in its first Relay Recess, an event that brings the American Cancer Society Relay for Life to elementary schools nationwide.

“We go through with telling the kids about being healthy,” Supervisor Joanie Donohue said. “That’s the whole point.”

Every year, Cedar Creek’s Parent-Teacher Association does a walk-a-thon and donates funds raised to various charities. This year the school decided to participate in Relay Recess as it ties in with the Relay for Life of Berkeley and Lacey Townships, which several school district teams participated in last month.

For Relay Recess, one or two classes walked—with music playing, some danced—around the school’s field at a time. Classes also walked during recess and their physical education periods.

The day began with a school wide assembly and walking started at 9:15 a.m. The event concluded at 2:35 p.m. with a closing ceremony.

To raise money for the American Cancer Society, students brought home a paper paw, decorated it and donated $1. The paws were hanging on the walls of Cedar Creek. The school also had a coin drive.

As of 12:30 p.m., Cedar Creek had raised $1,342.

Donohue said Relay Recess is a great way to close off the year, especially after state assessments.

“The kids are ready,” she said.
