OCC to Offer Online Classes in China

OCC would be the first community college in America to offer such a program

Ocean County College is on the brink of becoming the first community college in the country to offer distance learning to students in China.

"It’s a historic event,’’ said OCC Trustee Stephan Leone as administrators from Tianjin Radio and TV University visited those on the Toms River campus to work for a memorandum of understanding that would trigger a pilot project between OCC and the Chinese university for the spring semester of 2012.

The pilot program is designed to see if Chinese students can get credit there for courses that originate in this country, according to OCC President Dr. Jon Larson.

He credited Allen Wang, CEO of Timecruiser Computing Corporation, and Dr. Richard Yankosky, the OCC Distance Learning Consultant, with working to build the bridge to China.

The Chinese university has been a trendsetter in that country. Established in 1958, it pioneered in the use of radio and the mail to educate college students.

In addition to their visit to OCC, they will tour the State House and State Museum in Trenton with Assemblyman David Wolfe [R-10], of Brick Township on Tuesday. Also on Tuesday they will meet with Dr. Lawrence Nespoli, president of the New Jersey Council of County Colleges. On Wednesday they will visit Kean University and meet it’s president, Dr. Dawood Farahi.

Celebratory resolutions adopted by the OCC trustees and New Jersey lawmakers were presented Monday to the visitors.
