More Forums Planned on Lacey School District's Drug Testing Policy

Policy has been debated for several months

The Lacey Township school district will host another community forum in September as it continues to determine the ground rules of a proposed random drug testing policy for students.

"The feedback that we get from the community helps us move forward, and we find that to be extremely valuable," acting Superintendent Vanessa Clark said at a Board of Education meeting Monday night.

Lacey is mapping out a plan to randomly drug test high school students who participate in extracurricular activities and those who hold a parking permit.

Similar policies exist in other local school districts, such as Brick Township.

Approximately $30,000 has been set aside in the 2013-14 budget for random drug testing.

District officials have been "working steadfast" on the outcome of previous community forums held on the drug testing policy and taking what parents and students have suggested into account, Clark said.

The date for the next meeting has not yet been determined, but will eventually scheduled for an evening in September, Clark said.
