Lions Roundup: Boys, Girls Basketball Lead Divisions; Wrestlers Ready for SCT

A periodic roundup of Lacey High School sports

The Lacey wrestling team is gearing up for the Shore Conference Tournament, after receiving the 10th seed in the 2012 field.

The Lions, led by senior 220-pounder Lex Knapp and heavyweight Jake Fernandez, have just three losses, and won two of three matches in a quad match at Barnegat on Saturday. Knapp, a District 24 champion last season, is undefeated, with titles at The College of New Jersey Pride and East Brunswick tournaments.

The Lions (10-3) defeated Monsignor Donovan 74-6 and Barnegat 38-22, but lost 32-30 to Point Boro after rallying to take a 30-29 lead thanks to pins by Pat Schinder at 195 and Fernandez that sandwiched a forfeit by Point Boro. But Pete Gencarelli earned a 10-6 decision over James Knoeller at 106 to win the match.

Lacey’s seed earned it a spot in the round of 16, and the Lions are scheduled to face seventh-seeded Raritan at Ocean Township High School. A victory will advance the Lions to quarterfinal round, where they are likely to face second-seeded Ocean. Thursday’s action begins at 5 p.m.

In girls basketball: The Lions (9-4, 6-0) are in the driver’s seat in Shore Conference Class B South, as they finished off the first round of division games undefeated, including a 44-42 victory over rival and defending division champ Central.

Lacey, which has been led by Jenna Fleck and Tayler Batalla, faces a key challenge this week when the Lions travel to Central on Friday night for a rematch.

In boys basketball: Like the girls, the boys team is undefeated in Class B South. The Lions have just one loss overall, a 38-34 defeat at the hands of Toms River South in the WOBM Christmas Classic. The Lions (12-1, 6-0) have had a balanced attack, with contributions from Tasheen Carrow, Ryan Reitmeyer and Logan McDonald, among others.

Lacey faces Brick and Central again this week, after recording double-digit victories over both earlier this month.

In swimming: Sophomore Ben Smith placed third in the 200 and fourth in the 200 butterfly at the Ocean County Boys Swimming Championships at the Ocean County YMCA on Sunday, the only Lacey swimmer in the top 10 among the boys. On the girls side, Lions freshman Leeanna Cass won the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke, and anchored the Lions’ fourth-place finish in the 200 medley relay, with Brianna Burke, Emily Kearney and Helana Franz. Burke, also a freshman, was fifth in the 500 freestyle.
