Lions Latest: Lions Continue to Grow

A look back at the prior week in Lacey High School sports and a preview of what lies ahead

Baseball: After starting 0-2 in divisional play and 2-4 overall, the Lions took to Myrtle Beach in South Carolina for spring break to play baseball teams from all over the country. They picked up their first win of the year with a 14-3 shellacking of St. Peters of New York. A few days later, they followed up with another win, this time over Niles McKinley of Ohio, 4-3. A bases loaded walk and hit by pitch gave Lacey the lead and Brian Emerson locked down the game with a save.

Returning to New Jersey, the Lions will have a busy week. On Monday and Wednesday, Lacey will travel to Toms River East and Barnegat, respectively. The Lions will then host Pinelands Regional on Friday at 3:45p.m. Saturday morning at 10 a.m. the Toms River North Mariners will visit Lacey to conclude the four game week.

Softball: Lacey improved to 2-3 with their walk-off win over Toms River North on Friday. The Lady Lions took a 3 run lead into the top of the seventh inning but the Mariners tied the score with timely hitting. Jenna Appello had the game winning base knock as her double in the bottom of the seventh scored Amanda Santoro, who hit a double to start the frame. Also contributing were Sara Wright with a two run double and Jenna Fleck with a solo home run. Katie Valiant was credited with the win.

Lacey will have two chances to pick up their first win of the year this week. The first opportunity to get a win will be Monday on the road at 4 p.m., at Shore Regional High School. On Thursday, the Lions will host Brick Township at 3:45 p.m.

Girls Lacrosse: Sitting at 3-3 the Lady Lions are hoping they are on the cusp of putting together a winning streak. Since losing their season opener against Howell, the Lions have flip-flopped wins and losses getting back to .500 with a win over Pinelands Regional. An attack producing 21 goals in the 21-13 win was fueled largely by Lauren Salemme with four goals. Abbie Brewster and Amila Fetter scored three each. Each girl added an assist. The balanced attack produced 11 goals in the first half and 10 in the second.

Next up for the Lions is a battle with Barnegat on Monday at 3:30 p.m. at home and another home game Wednesday 3:30 p.m. against Manchester. Closing out the week is a Friday contest as the Lions will host the Central Regional Golden Eagles at 3:45 p.m.
