Lacey Girls Soccer Preparing For 2011 Season

Lions Varsity girls soccer team hoping hard work will pay off

For Lacey Lions girls varsity head soccer coach, 2010 was certainly not what Juliann Schlossareck might have expected heading in. The 13 year head coach had watched her squad round out the year with a 3-13 record, which was very unusual for the coach who holds an impressive 155-80-4 record.

This year, with a surplus of returners, Schlossareck is banking on the heart and hustle of the girls to mix in with talent and skill to bring the Lions back on top.

"(We) take great pride in our history and traditions," said Schlossareck. "There are always bumps in the road; but any good program learns from those hard times.”

Lacey finds returners sprinkled in all over the field. Senior forwards Mariel Beach and Abbie Brewster will be joined by junior Dayna Corino, Brittany Biele and sophomore Alexi Della Pietro as players who will be expected to put the ball in the back of the net.

“We are going to continue with our tradition of hard work and never give up attitude. Each year brings a new combination of players to the program,” said Schlossareck.

While Schlossareck claimed it was too early to tell who the top newcomers may be, the hard work and attitude will definitely be showcased on the defensive side of the ball.

Every great team starts from the backline – having a veteran, experienced goalkeeper is invaluable, as they can align and unite the defense on the fly. Senior Goalkeeper Rachel Bruckel appears up to the task. She will be helped by two senior defenders, Clarice Pulcine and Taylor Raymond. Junior Ashley Candeletti and sophomores Jennifer Coleman and Rebekah Lawler will provide additional support.

Midfield might be a position where someone new may jump in as the halfback position is thin with just Senior Chelsea Sedeyn and junior Tara Coleman listed as true returning halfbacks.

“As simple as it sounds, we must score more goals and let fewer goals in our net,” said Schlossareck. “Brick Memorial, Brick Township, and Central Regional are a few of the games we have marked on our schedule, we play many excellent teams this year. Our goal is to be competitive with the B-South and make the end of the year tournaments.”

Schlossareck also noted that there are a few players trying to decide which colleges they would like to attend.
