Help Send Lacey Lions to Nationals with a Roar

The Lacey community is invited to a Friends and Family Nationals Send-Off in honor of the co-ed cheerleading team on Saturday at 4 p.m. The event is free.

The co-ed cheerleading team, which placed second at nationals in 2012, will be leaving for the Universal Cheerleaders Association High School Nationals in Florida on Wednesday, Feb. 6, competing on Saturday, Feb. 9.

“This year we are hoping to place first in the nation,” Assistant Coach Alyssa Iapicco said.

At the send-off, the team will perform their routine for nationals.

“It’s important for them to be really fired up before they go down there,” she said. “A lot of people in town won’t see them unless they have a reason to go to a competition. (The team) feels it’s important to show (Lacey) what they do."

This year, the routine incorporates new and more challenging lifts, Iapicco said.

The team practices six days a week for two hours.

“They’re beat by the end of it. It really takes a lot out of them,” she said.

Many of the members also practice individually, she said.

“It takes a lot of fundraising as well as being good enough to go down there,” she said.

The team had to raise approximately $30,000.

The co-ed cheerleading team will compete in semifinals at 8 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9. Finals will be held later that evening.

Lacey’s co-ed cheerleading team has been competing at nationals since 2009. There will be 20 team members on the mat at nationals.

Wow, $30,000 a year is spent on THIS of all things? What a frivolous expense, just for a little vacation in Florida! Why not put this money toward scholarships or something more important, in this economy. This sounds like a "pet project" of someone's, to me!

Heard they placed 6th out 7 finalists, that's a shame. I have to ask though, why is so much money sunk into this team every year. Is it the same with all the other teams? I think it's about time to end this little annual boondoggle!

the money does not come from the school it comes from the team. The team works hard at getting the money for the trip. KNOW YOUR FACTS!!!!!!!!!!

I know for a fact that the cheerleaders do not PERSONALLY RAISE $30,000 on their own. Most of it is raised by the student government via fundraisers, when that money could certainly be directed toward more useful purposes! The student government is told at the beginning of the year that raising $ for the coed cheer team to go to Florida for a week is their number one goal - ridiculous waste of $!!!

It's WHAFIS, not WHALIS, and it MUST be incorporated in the overland wave propagation modeling. I'veRead More been telling you this for weeks @Spooner. I offered to discuss it, but you were caught up on some sand blaster theory. BFE's will certainly be affected. As a sidebar, the author of the link mentioned mixed up the mapping terms. We currently have effective maps or FIRM's which establish BFE. The maps (ABFE)that were released in December and adopted as the state building code (+ freeboard) are advisory (incomplete and wrong). Working maps are due out in a few weeks followed shortly thereafter by preliminary maps, which are the maps that can be appealed. Approximately 18 to 24 months after the release of the preliminary maps there will be new effective maps (new FIRM's) with new BFE 's. If the preliminary maps are not drastically different than the ABFE's, you can count on a mass of appeals, and quite likely, protracted litigations.

@Spooner, I have something that you may want to read. Go to the Borough of Mantoloking website. OnRead More the right hand side is a column entitled Post Sandy Information. Near the bottom is a tab called "uncategorized". Click on it and there is a letter used as the Boro response to ABFE. It is very telling and makes a lot of sense.

Congrats, Pat. You deserve this. Despite all you've been through, you kept it going with your job,Read More your writing, and all the "chronicles" that expressed the plight of the Sandy victims in a way that no one else could. That has been so appreciated.
