Career Day Draws Unique Professionals

Lanoka Harbor Elementary School holds its seventh annual Career Day

The held its seventh annual Career Day with more than 25 visitors.

Occupations from boxing to meteorology were represented as parents and community members gave presentations about their jobs.

The event broadens the children’s minds as they learn about professions other than the more familiar occupations such as teaching, school Supervisor Ann Dezendorf said. She added that now that the kids have been exposed to different occupations, they might leave the school and one day start a career that they might have otherwise not even thought to pursue.

Greg Larsen, a member of the state’s Urban Search and Rescue, visited a second-grade class and discussed how the group finds trapped people using dogs, flashlights and cameras.

Representatives from the Urban Search and Rescue compared their jobs to a game of hide and seek and shared stories from past experiences.

The squad assisted a scene in Pennsylvania where a girl fell down a well by using their specialized equipment to speak to her.

Gary Avenoso, a boxer, spoke to a third-grade class about the importance of exercise for good health. His presentation was interactive as he had the kids participate in various exercises.

A meteorologist, drummer, zumba instructor, fitness instructor, electrical safety experts, a police officer, and many more were at Career Day. Mayor Gary Quinn also paid a visit.
